How do you know for sure that someone is bipolar?

A friend of mine will often yell at me for something and then say something nice in the following sentence.

Ex) “YOU! YOU KNOW WHAT?! NO. YOU CAN DO THIS. I CAN’T SPEND ALL MY TIME ON THIS! Oh….do you want some corn on the cob? It’s done now.”

uh, if im reading that right, that is not bipolar. Bipolar, from what I know, is more of a extreme switch from good to evil. And from what I understand, its not usually that fast of a switch either, it usually takes a moment. But I have no real idea, I’ve only had one friend that was bipolar around me.

That isn’t bipolar. Maybe they just don’t know how to behave socially?

Bipolar Disorder takes about 6 months to cycle from a high to a low. It takes a about a year to make a complete cycle. I forget exactly which chemicals are being produced when but basically the brain is producing too much of X chemical so it almost completely stops production of that chemical while increasing the production of chemical Y. Over the next 6 months it keeps doing this until there is so much chemical Y that the person hits a low point and becomes incredibly depressive. This is when it switches back again until chemical X is so abundant that they hit a high and pretty much go manic.

When a person who is bipolar hits a low they’re are incredibly depressive and pessimistic. They’re down on themselves and everything is against them. When they hit their high they act irrationally. They will blow their entire life savings on an incredibly stupid investment but will not realize how stupid they were until the high passes.
