I for one am glad to have someone around who lightens the mood and throws a joke in unexpectedly. Life is too short not to have a laugh every now and then.

Welcome Back Abstract and Little Nick. I can’t believe i almost forgot Abstract. Then again, no one welcomed me back. I guess I’m a big enough addict to this site for all the other addicts to notice
Actually mystical I did notice you were gone for about a month and a half this summer. Welcome back to you and Abstract too… the thing about littlenick is when he is on here he is on every day for hours making dozens of posts and you really get used to the comedy and off the wall comments. When that was missing the whole website seemed like a different place. I am sure I would not be missed as much if I were to disappear.
I was really happy to log on this morning and see that littlenick made the number one spot! It shows a lot of people missed him not just me. Way to go help.commers!

Littlenick, welcome back although I did wonder if you had found excitement and fulfillment somewhere else.
Help.com is a buffet and what is a buffet without variety? It’s a shame when people believe they must control others in order to relieve their own anxiety. I wouldn’t waste any time fretting about it. Those are the same people who freak out when they don’t have the crusts cut off their white bread sandwiches.

If you’ve come here to tell someone they’re being a troll, then don’t come here again. If you feel that way report it to a moderator and let them decide. Posting it yourself counters your argument somewhat.
For anyone else, people who disagree with your point of view are entitled to; please don’t start a slanging match with them. Report any posts that you feel are inappropriate.
Let’s also remember why littlenick was banned in the first place. I’m sure it’s common knowledge, so please don’t anyone else find themselves in the same situation.

We glorify littlenick because he has made us happy in times when all we needed was a smile. We do it cause we love him for the happiness he’s brought us. Perhaps some of the reason you aren’t getting much help is because you’re so stand-offish

I am pretty disturbed by this move by the mods. I’m astonished that mods have taken it on themselves to do more than stop hatred and spam. I do not accept that posts belong to posters. None of us pays for this site and none of us has any property rights in any post. Posts are simply jumping off points for discussions.
If people want a private consultation, they can go to professional counsellors and pay $200/hr. Reality comes with a peanut gallery, and sometimes the peanuts are smarter than the self-appointed experts (myself included).

We all asked and asked again, he took no notice of us.
That is entirely up to him.
I hope the next time he gets banned. there is not so much fuss made about the issue.

What I said above stands is as I see the situation.
So many things can keep people off the site and sometimes it has nothing to do with being banned. Sometimes people are just busy with life. With nearly 300 friends, there are bound to be many who notice a long absence. I notice when my online friends are away for an extended time. And, I’m always happy to see them return. :)

I was invited to the post by the original poster. Littlenick is on my friends list. We have been friends here for a very long time.
I still stand by my first reply and indeed the rest of them.
Now lets all of us calm down.
I will not say something I do not mean. I always try to be helpfull, it might not look it at times. I will however be as truthfull as I can be.

I think littlenick really lightened the atmosphere at help.com. I’m glad he’s back! He has responded to more posts than anyone I know! Also, sometimes off topic, quirky remarks are what’s needed to lighten the mood. Not everything is life and death… Not everything has to be so serious.

i found out in real life, that the best thing to make someone happy is NOT to talk about his problem, but rather make him laugh and feel acceptable and free…
when he is relived it is easier to approach the core of the problem.
(or just forget about the problem and start the change)
so i welcome littlenicks approach on the site,
and all you there tweaching your nose, remember that there is more than one way to help a person.
(cinic blunt truth is also a good help in a lot of cases - of self blindness for example)

littlenick is a very smart fellow. He’s very popular for a lot of reasons. Nobody can dispute the fact that he gave a lot of great advice and useful information to a lot of people. He made a difference for many.
I would expect this to be a permanent ban. Otherwise, it would send a message that bans don’t mean anything accumulatively and more users would stick their toes over the line to see how far they can go. I’d like to think it’s temporary but that’s not our call. It’s up to the moderators.

You can’t have a workable community without ground rules. Civilized society requires structure. I disagree with you, Genesis. It isn’t a lack of ‘guts’ that keep others from speaking their minds; it’s a sense of appropriateness for the time/place/situation. Surely there are ways to communicate differences of opinion without being hurtful in the process. ‘Playing the game’ is a part of social etiquette. If everyone said exactly what they are thinking all of the time, there would be no place in this world with an iota of peace.
We are all here as ‘guests’ of Help.com. The mods are the hosts. They have the responsibility of keeping it all safe and relatively sane. When one guest hurts another, what solution is there other than to show the disruptive guest the door?
I don’t like it. It took me a long time to understand littlenick. He gave this place a lot of spark. But how many times can you shoot yourself in the foot before you end up without a leg to stand on? It won’t be the same without him; this is true. I could say the same about a lot of people here.
It might help to have a chat room where users in a heated exchange can be invited to go duke it out verbally ‘off site’. No holds barred. Let it fly! No penalties. Akin to ‘duking it out’ with words. I don’t know. I just know this isn’t the place for that.
Anyhow, I don’t think littlenick will ever be gone. I expect he’ll be lurking or making an alias account. :) After all, he’s a rebel. Right?
The comments that I have read that Littlenick had previously made, I saw no wrong in them. I have since read other comments that I do believe were inappropriate. My mistake is not reading them all and acted with short-sightedness. Of the ones that I did read they were intelligent, to the point and I could see that Littlenick took a lot of time and effort to put them together suchas: “Finding a Job.”
You are right about structure and rules of etiquette, we have to have those. Not everyone is perfect… myself included. Above-all we must have compassion, real sincere compassion to help others and in some cases I have answered some of my own problems.
To me all life can be a struggle from time to time. Some people can go along and nothing too much happens while others, for whatever reason, are constantly beset with challenges to face.
I agree with the chatroom idea, I think some people do want to sound off to others, they are just that angry. It would help to let the person know that they can talk to someone one on one.
I do find it hard to accept that some unacceptable comments/conversations can remain as shouts and no action apparently taken when ANYONE - child included - might stumble on those ?
I agree with the poster above who says that certain conversations need to be off-site. Whatever is posted on help.com is publicly available and there are some topics floating about here that really have no place at all on a site like this.
Perhaps this is something that needs to be addressed when “cleaning up the site of rebels”?

So, if someone were to persistently post offensive material in shout boxes they should in theory be banned too?
Even if those engaging in the conversation weren’t complaining.. it’s still against TOS as far as I’m aware?
I’m just a bit concerned that this is one aspect of help.com that has never really been properly targeted for “clean up”. There are certain people on this site who rarely help but use it for chatting via shoutboxes and messing about it seems.
I’m concerned that because shoutboxes are not as obvious as posts, all manner of nonsense can go on relatively unseen. But it’s still publicly available and as far as I am aware, does not get filtered as “adult” even when it’s sexually explicit and not suitable for minors.
So if a minor happens to shout one of those involved, the damage is done.
I’m not sure if this is off-topic or not, but it seemed appropriate to mention it since the post is discussing what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour and the consequences of it.

Well we don’t stalk people’s shoutboxes, so we wouldn’t know unless the person receiving the shout reported it and when that happens we shout the person and issue a warning and often tell them not to shout that person again.

There are users (especially the new ones) who think ’shouts’ are private. They use shouts to ask for and give out IM info and email addresses. Maybe a post that reminds everyone that shouts are NOT private, ANYONE can read others’ shouts and that the site rules apply to shouts as well would be a good first step.
As far as I know, people can (and DO) report messages that are found in shoutboxes; that’s why the little red flag is there next to each shout. If it’s inappropriate, flag it. Would the mods have a problem with this increase in reports? Can it be handled? If so, a post can also let the users know that shouts can be flagged by anyone..not just those involved in the conversations. That alone would probably stop a lot of the inappropriate shouting. At least for a while. ;)
I’ll admit that I find it creepy as well as ‘big brotherish’ that others comb through shoutboxes but I’m not naive enough to think it doesn’t happen. I know for a fact that several people read my shouts. It would be nice if we could charge by the ‘read’…maybe a penny a shout? lols j/k :P I’m willing to forego some ‘freedoms’ being aware that there are young ones on this site. Theres nothing wrong with shouts…
If you find somthing offensive in someone elses shoutbox, ignore it, thats like that whole if someone tells someone else a dirty joke and you overhear it is it harrassment. Its not.
If you find that kind of thing offensive stay away from it.
That’s a good idea kitten. I don’t think a lot of people ARE aware that shoutboxes are not private, are openly accessible to minors as well as adults and fall under the same TOS and FAQ as posts. Or that they can be reported by anyone. A help.com shoutbox isn’t “closed” in the same way as an IM on say MSN might be and it’s an odd situation to be in when we tell parents and youngsters to check out who they are chatting to and then imply they are stalking if they do!
What a catch-22 it presents. But I think the answer is to insist that certain conversations don’t take place on help.com. There’s no reason why they can’t go off-site until such time as help.com wins the lottery and can install all sorts of wonderful new filters and pay our moderators a decent wage! :o)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any way criticising the moderation team. Just highlighting a blip in the set-up that allows this to continue.

If you find somthing offensive in someone elses shoutbox, ignore it, thats like that whole if someone tells someone else a dirty joke and you overhear it is it harrassment. Its not.
If you find that kind of thing offensive stay away from it.
That’s fine if you’re on an adult-only site maybe. But we’re not Nante. And the legal side of it is very clear. You can’t post such material where children CAN access it.
