I don’t know how to reach a life changing opportunity at 15.

I’m incredibly interested in sciences. I know I can exceed in studying different kinds of science, but I am particularly interested in microscopic work, more specifically nanotechnology. This, however, isn’t important. I have read much of the information the internet has to offer as well as whatever scraps of information I can get from the science books at school. My next stop will be any libraries offering the topic, but what can I do to further myself beyond the books and webpages? I know there is a well known school in Berkley, CA that specializes in the study, but I’m still only 15 and fairly un-knowledgeable compared to the men and women of the school. I would like to believe there are courses I could take to learn as much as I can, but I don’t know of any, especially any that could be accessible to me. I’m not sure how to reach this opportunity, other than wait. Any suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.

I live near Berkley, CA, and that school would be a very good choice if you’re seriously interested in the subject. You don’t have to worry about being unknowledgeable too much. That’s what you go to school, for. If you’re still uncomfortable with yourself, go to the library and flood your mind with information relating to Nanotechnology, as well as any related professions. You’re still young, so don’t be discouraged. Beyond the books and webpages, there is plenty you can do. Why not talk to teachers who may know people with more knowledge of it specifically? There’s nothing like speaking directly with someone involved. You can also do your own experiments as well. There’s a lot of possibilities! Nanobots are the wave of the future. While the study of them is still in its infancy, you never know what could happen.

You could send an email to people at Berkeley and tell them of your enthusiasm, and ask something like you did in this post.
The response could be potentially really helpful.

There are many other options for studying too.
Here’s an example, the open courseware at MIT.

Are you taking all of the science classes you can in high school and getting straight A’s? That would be a good start. It is really hard to get into UC Berkeley they only accept 21% of applicants and the average SAT score is over 1900.

I’ve gone to one teacher,my science teacher last year, in hopes of doing just that, but it came to be that I knew more about the subject than she did. I will make a point of seeing the other teachers in my school, but as you might know, Nanotechnology isn’t taught to school teachers. I will certainly take your advice, in asking other people what they know. I guess, I never really opened my mind enough to ask someone, though it seems the most logical thing to do. I would absolutely love to be one of the people involved in creating a future with nanotechnology.

Well that just gives me more reason to try and get in, I suppose. I am currently taking one science class, but due to a lack of credits from my freshmen year I don’t have room in my schedule to fit another, However I do plan to take more next year, and in the honors courses as well.

I’m not sure I should do this quite yet, but I will keep it in mind. I have a few things I should probably take care of before contacting them. I want to somehow show them I am capable of studying there first.

As for this, I will definitely look into what MIT has to offer as well. Thank you, I didn’t realize that MIT had so much to offer, also it’s VERY close to my home, so it should be considerably more accessible.

I certainly will. I’m determined, now. Thanks!
