Sooo I might be the owner of a 2002 hyundai santa fe!

I’m excited but also scared it’s hard to be happy about a new car when you have worries like “what if it turns out to be the worst investment ever?” So once again I need your advice on how this car sounds! so it had 153k miles and it’s in tip top shape it looks gorgeous and it runs pretty good, my mechanical uncle said it makes a weird noise in the back that might be the berries? but the guy said it can’t be b/c he put them new he says it needs new tires, which is no biggie, and then my uncle said it had a leak that the guy will check out and get back to us on but besides that its great! the original price was 4200 but i got him to lower it to 3800 what do you guys think?

Not familiar with that one.
I know that the first hyundai´s out here was just plain rubbish and have not followed them with interest. I think the quality is better now but i´m not certain how far back one can go.

It should not make any noise even though the tires are bad. If there is a noise then it should be checked out properly.

IMO, this sounds like a bad deal. Mileage seems very high to me (average mileage for 9 years should be no more than 135K), it already seems like having leakage problems, and thats the one you have discovered so far. The guy didnt tell you about it. Who knows there could be more problems that he is not telling and later on you might find out. If it needs new tires, thats AT LEAST $300 expense, so its really $3800+$300=$4100.

I think you should try to look for any other deal. You should first decide how much money you want to spend. Then look for cars 10% higher than that. You can bargain at least 10% to any car owner. Also, if you’re going to spend under $5K, I’d suggest try not to look for a SUV, instead look for a sedan or coupe. Chances of finding a good SUV under $5K is less, but you can still find a decent sedan or coupe for $5K. I think Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, Chevy Malibu, or even Toyota Corolla would be great choices. I am not a fan of Ford at all. Hope this helps you. Good Luck! xD

thanks, well the warranty was offered but its more money =( and I’m really tight on money. The SUV really seems nice, and the guy fixed the leak he said a hose was loose but they tightened it and refilled the fluid. I really want an SUV and where I live its kind of neccessary…

you really think it’s a bad deal?

Yep, I think its a bad deal, but thats just me. Do what your heart says. Worst case, it’ll prolly die out on you in middle of nowhere in a cold night lol but at least you’ll learn something through it :p and if you really need/want an suv, consider Toyata Rav4 and Honda CRV, great SUVs xD

a car is a not very economical investment,
it would most likely always turn out to cost a lot more than you planned.
but its well worth it for the soul!
its a sort of freedom you just don’t get when it’s not your own car.

Well, sorry for the late reply…
Guessing he meant bearings not berries ;) (I may be wrong)
And Im quite sure the owner wouldnt have replaced them (depending on which bearing set, there a re a lot of them in cars).
BTW, hyunda has a long warratny but no car warranty covers more than 100K
The longest car warranty given by the manufacturer is 100K and thats by hyundai itself and normally isnt transferrable from the first owner unless certified, and lasts for a max of 10 years (should know since I own one as well)
Apart from that hyundai has made huge improvemets in quality over the last few years, but before the 2000’s they were really bad…
If the car is an older model it may not be the best deal!
All the best!
