if i accidentally get a lot of money in my bank account

and it’s been more than ten days and i tell the teller that it’s not mine then i have every legal right to claim it but i didn’t tell the teller until 14 days because i didn’t know it was there and that’s when i made my own deposit. i told him yesterday. do i still have a right to claim it today since it was already past ten days anyway?

If its a LOT of money you go to the police and they do what they do. Most of the time it’ll be ok and you can have it, but you should check with the cops before taking someone else’s money.

You really need to find out where it came from. If someone deposited into your account or if its a bank error. If its a bank error then your not entitled to any of it and can be prosecuted if you take it out. Check with the bank.

I would go to the cops and if they didn’t find the person and said it was okay then your fine but just in case if you can keep the money take the names of the officers or whom ever advised you it was alright that way if something happens you’re not responsible for the repercussions.

You did not sweat, tear nor bleed over this large sum of currency. You have about as much right to claim it as your neighbour’s pile of arranged bricks whilst he’s wandering around town trying to remember where he lives.
But then the banking system’s rules don’t often seem to be in concordance with logic.
So… beats me. You’d need to ask some banking-system-educated person. I hear those can often be found inside a bank.

It depends on the sum of money. Some banks will eat the cost and fund the customer who was SUPPOSED to receive that money. That’s only if you’re lucky, though. Most will take the money back. If you have used the money, they will threaten or something…

Have you not been watching the economic news over the last year? Banks have every right to take the pile of bricks. Its just a couple more 1’s and 0’s to drop down the sink and then beg the government for.

well the bank said they were going to look into it and then i talked to someone who’s been through this before and she said that her lawyer told her after informing the bank and after 10 days that money is hers and to be safe you put it into another account for i’m not sure what period because they can’t claim it back out of a different account but after that period of time the money belongs to you and that sort of makes sense to me. weird that i didn’t earn it but so handy. i could start living my life.. just wondering cuz we didn’t discover it til after 10 days and the bank had no idea and i was wondering about it so much cuz it gives me hope for doing things that i couldn’t sleep last night.. which is why i wanna get it figured out today..

Most lottery winners end up spending not only their gained fortune but also their previously earned one. Careful.

‘Twas bootcamp. One may only reside in it for so long, though, before getting kicked back into the adults’ swimming pool that is reality.

For that amount… they will get their money back. I would talk to a lawyer yourself. Or at least threaten to.

Really, if you took the money, closed your account, and moved it to a different bank I don’t think they could do anything about it….

Wow, lucky you! 65 grand is a lot of money!!!

would’ve been lucky me. they took it back. should’ve transferred it last night.. they might’ve called me on it but i don’t think they really would’ve been able to do anything and the girl said i could never claim that money but i don’t believe it.. oh well.. quality of people..

When they find it, and they will, you may be subject to theft and fraud. You could spend a while in jail.
Leave the money where it is, I do hope you did the right thing and told them. Do so by email or letter, that way you will cya. Thinking about taking the money and leaving state? Crossing state lines (the more state lines involved the more charges you will incur)will add more charges.
LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS and let thebank know of their mistake. You will be better off.

Ahh now that it’s gone, you can’t get it back because it was never rightfully yours.

You would not be subject to theft or fraud. Why would you be put in jail? That’s ridiculous.

No problem, the money is gone, everything is fine BUT if something like this ever happens to you, know that the bank has to take the loss.

Hope you’re lucky again!

There was someone in Australia recently who were arrested because of found money! I thought that was wild, that they could charge them. But I would never recommend keeping “found” money, it belongs to someone. Maybe a jerk, but it could be someone’s life savings.

true say but i’d be checking on that amount of money before i left the bank and made sure it went in the right account or even at all. it was there for two weeks and would’ve stayed there had i not made a deposit that day. it’s absolutely ridiculous.

Someone else’s money was accidentally deposited into your account. They are suffering the loss. It was good you informed the teller. I only hope it is returned to the rightful owner.
I hope you never suffer loss because of someone else’s mistake/negligence. Sincerely- it happens and is unacceptable.
I am not slighting you in any way
What you dis is commendable

There is a man in town with the same name as my husband. Twice they deposited, large sums of money. Once 20 grand! We called them up and told them they were just too good to us, and that “Jack and The Beanstalk” was overdue. She let me know what my wedding ring was appraised at, and that she thought her husband was surprising her! We get eachother’s mail and half the time I’m telling her what her niece did in preschool. We never met and have this weird friendship and catch up on eachothers mail, opened by accident!

Yes, I dealt with a very angry librarian, she insisted she had left several messages, yes, I sure heard them, and called! It’s not meeeeeeee, gosh I have a 26, and 20 year old! I explained, I’d be quite concerned if they had checked out “Jack and The Beanstalk!”

Gosh Christmas! Both son’s birthdays! Six years apart, they called us, “Mercy, how many kids do you have? Just 2, but it’s thier birthdays. She had all thier stuff! Arrrrrghhhh, so many mixups, gosh blockbuster hated us! We never stepped foot in the place!

They are really nice people though, and we all forge ahead through this with honesty and humor.

Pretty funny I’m reading this now. This is happening to me. My IRS refund went to the wrong account number but same bank. Right now its been a few months since this piece of crap withdrew the money immediately from his account all the time knowing it did not belong to him. Now he’s in deep sh** since the IRS is tracking him and also the police are getting the search warrant this week (which is necessary to receive all info the bank fraud dept has). Then he gets arrested. Who knows how long before I’ll get my money.
What comes around goes around and you really shouldn’t knowingly keep money that does not belong to you.
