My name is Amanda, I am 18 years old and I don’t know what to do with my life!

I graduated from highschool in June 2010. Since then I havnt gone to post secondary school because I am unsure and confused about what I want to take. I want to be able to go to school with a plan and a purpose however school isn’t something that I enjoy. I havent found a job and have basically been doing nothing. I want a career path that will be something cool and interesting, something that is original and different. My older brother is a professional mountain biker, he has such an exciting lifestyle travelling and partying and going to all these awesome comps and events such as crankworx in whistler bc. I wish I was as talented as he is but it just doesnt seem to be in the works for me, Ive tried taking snowboarding to that level and now Im starting to ride mountain bikes too. I wish I could have a similar lifestyle as he does but I dont know kind of career path would take me there. Any suggestions? Ideas? I’m open to anything.

A good friend of mine is a skydiving instructor, and he says the daily adrenaline rush is just out of this world, of course it took him a few years to get where he is, but i wouldn’t mind jumping out of planes at 15,000 feet for a living!

i cant think of much more exciting jobs…

just thought i’d put that one out there…

Read “What color is your parachute?” by Richard Bolles.

Essentially:

- write out your top ten proudest accomplishments
- identify the skills you used, the people you liked working with, the industry/gadgets you liked using in those accomplishments
- look for jobs that combine those skills/people/industry/gadgets
- find people in those jobs and ask them for 10-15 minute coffee chats to discuss their career path
- if you like what you hear, ask to job shadow or volunteer in their work
- if you like that, then pursue the steps they took to get where they are… school or whatever
