Experience help: How would one go about software development? - Help.com

How would one go about software development?

I’m fourteen. I’ve always been fascinated with programming and the like, though I’ve never actually done anything with it. I know I learned HTML/XHTML/CSS a few years back, and I’d like to think I’m pretty good with it, but I don’t think that amounts to anything, haha… I’m fairly sure that I want to be a software developer / programmer when I’m older (as nothing else would suit me better; I’m useless at everything not related to computers), and I want to know how I can start learning now rather than later. Is there any site I can look at regarding software development so I can research more on the subject? How should I begin? What languages should I start on? Can/should I even start now? Is there anything important I need to know before starting?

For later on, what are some good colleges I could go to for this (preferably in Texas)? What exactly would I be majoring in? What level of degree would I need/how many years of school? How would I go about getting a career after I’m done with school? Could I make it being entirely self-employed? What do you think the salary would be for someone just starting out in that field (immediately after college, no previous experience)? And for even later, with quite a few years of experience? I’d probably be doing something in web design, as well.

Thanks in advance!
Once I get an idea or topic into my head I have to know everything about it. xD This will be my demise.

Pika-Pi-KA! Start with HTML, C++, VB, and learn how to use Adobe. After that, you’ll have a concept on how to create applications. As for schools, go here:

Contacting the school for informaton will probably connect you with a counselor, who can answer questions about job outlooks and salaries, or anything additional.

Absolute right on man! I’d start with html, then VB (aster to learn) and then C++. When you get into the pro stuff you will learn many more program languages. As for college, well I would wait till you 17 before ya start thinkin too far ahead.

Thanks! When you say learn how to use Adobe, are you talking about Dreamweaver or something?

Apologies, I’m a bit stupid. ;0;
What about PHP, MySQL? Are they important?

Should I learn BASIC before learning VB (because it apparently ‘evolved’ from it)?

well, given that you already know html and that you’ll probably do something in web design, I’d suggest you start off with a scripting language like javascript just to get your feet wet. and if that interests you maybe follow it up learning some server-side scripting. as for actual programming languages, I’d suggest you try a couple, pick one you like, and work with it for a few years, maybe c++, java, python, whatever. remember that getting a good feel for how programming works is far more important than learning any specific language; once you get it, you can pick up any language fairly quickly. besides, you don’t know what language you’re going to be programming in later, so don’t tie yourself to any one way language or way of doing things.

no problem. oh, and one other thing if you want to be a “real” programmer: find a computer you can screw around with and set up linux on it. it’ll do you a world of good.
