I’m a male of 56 years struggling with school loans.
I went back to school at 40 (Social Work and Theology undergraduate studies). I carried a 4.0 GPA throughout undergraduate studies and went on to a Masters degre in theology (M.Div.) — graduated in 1995. I have devoted my professional life (part time while studying for the M.Div. and full time ever since) to working as a chaplain with people on the underbelly of society — juvenile/adult gangs, people in jail/prison, drug/alcohol addiction, poverty, etc. I’ve founded two non-profit organizations in an attepmt to somehow formalize the work I do (both failed to be funded) and receive some kind of pay. I have a good job now, working for a hospital in drug/alcohol recovery chaplaincy, and my school loans are current, but there seems no hope to pay off these loans to retire. Mind you, I don’t want to quit working yet — I love what I do and I’m good at it, but the effects of working heavy industry in earlier years have taken a toll on my body and I can see the day coming when I’m going to have to slow down. There must be people out there that would find enough value in what I have devoted my life to that they would help with these school loans, don’t you think? How do I find them, approach them? Or do you have any other ideas? I appreciate your input!
