My lower back is killing me and I need help!

I’m 16 years old, and play volleyball. I have been diagnosed with TMJ in my jaw and MDI in both of my shoulders. (I have a lot of joint issues) My lower back has been hurting for almost a week. I can’t get comfortable and sleeping has turned into a nightmare. I’ve tried motrin/ibprofun/and icing my back and nothing relieves the pain. It’s not really sharp pain but I can tell something is wrong. My club season for volleyball started and I don’t think this is anything too serious. Yes, my parents are aware of the situation. What should I do?

I really sympathize- I had awful back pain when I was a teenager. I saw 5 different doctors, took all kinds of muscle relaxers and other pills, went to physical therapy, and was on the brink of surgery which I wanted but my parents wouldn’t let me do it. I then heard about this book, Healing Back Pain, by John E. Sarno:
http://www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pa…

After 2-3 years of misery, my back pain disappeared within 2 weeks of reading this book.

I am not a doctor (Sarno is!), but please make sure you get everything thoroughly checked out. I had an MRI, and there was a clear disc herniation which they labeled as the cause of my misery. Studies have been done, and the conclusion is clear: disc herniation in any form is not necessarily a predicator of back pain.

The message of the book is hard to hear- stress is the underlying cause of the pain. But that does not mean that the pain itself is not real! It is very real, I know. You also mentioned having TMJ, which I also have. The first question my dentist asked when we spoke about it was: are you under a lot of stress? I almost rolled out of the dentist chair in laughter because I was feeling pretty upset at the time, lol. Stress kills, and the mind is an incredibly powerful thing when it comes to pain, its causes, and its resolutions.

Be please take good care of yourself- I hope this helps! I havent had any back pain since it resolved, and that was almost a decade ago….
