What else can I eat?

About a year ago I was diagnosed with gastroparesis, a stomach problem which makes it very painful for me to eat, and so lately I have been surviving on yogurt, jello, pudding, oatmeal, a variety of smoothies, and, occasionally, ice cream. Does anyone have any other ideas of something I can eat that my stomach might be able to handle?

I know there is something called a brat diet that is used for kids with stomach viruses and stuff.

The basis of it is (i think) bananas, rice, applesauce, toast (brat)

There is an entire list of foods though in the diet I believe. That might give you some more options. : )

Instead of oatmeal try some coco wheats. Get a food processor and grind down chicken to a pulp then use some cambles cream of chicken put it on dry toast or mashed potatoes. Get a juicer and make all kinds of drinks that you can add to your yogurt or jello.

reading the link, you need to eat food that is as processed at possible, but I could be wrong, cause I know nothing of it. I’m guessing get a food processor if you want to eat more varied foods.

How about soups. I love potato soup. There are so many varieties of soup that you won’t get bored with eating the same things all the time.

Not a big fan of soups. I’ve had ramen on one or two occasions and even that causes me some problems w/ my stomach.

When I was diagnosed I was told to avoid foods high in fiber, nuts and seeds, meat, foods high in fat, beans, leafy greens (like brocolli and lettuce), and that’s just what I can remember!

I’ve heard of medium hot - hot peppers strengthening the inner wall of your stomach, helping digestion. I would talk with your doctor about that before actually trying it, but here are some suggestions: http://www.livestrong.com/article/222…

I was recently diagnosed with Diverticulosis. They tell me I don’t have enough fiber in my diet, though I can’t figure out why, because I do eat lots of veggies. Anyway, they also told me that I can no longer eat nuts or popcorn, or things that could get stuck in the little pockets in my colon. Geesh, I don’t wanna think so much about what I eat. I just wanna eat! …They also tell me to use Metamucil once a day. Don’t know if that will help you to better digest your food, but may be worth asking your doc about it.

Yea, well, I should be getting a call from someone this week to schedule surgery for my stomach. They plan on installing a pacemaker. Hopefully that’ll make a difference.

I think it would be best to talk with your doctor/s about what they suggest.
Aside from doing that, you could try adding one food at a time and see what works and what does not.
I hope you feel better Puck.

Puck - something about chewing gum, which you may or may not already know about:

EXCERPT from: http://www.dlife.com/diabetes/informa… If you suffer from gastroparesis, or delayed stomach emptying, chewing sugar-free gum may help. The act of chewing gum produces saliva, which not only contains helpful digestive enzymes but also stimulates muscular activity in the stomach. Chewing gum for at least one hour after meals can be a helpful treatment for gastroparesis in addition to other dietary changes.

.
The following is a 3 step diet for Gastroparesis. If you click on the link, you’ll find a detailed table for each of the 3 steps - which details exactly what can and can not be eaten - and the allowable amounts - during each of the 3 steps:

EXCERPT from: http://www.gicare.com/diets/Gastropar…

Gastroparesis may be caused by various conditions such as diabetes mellitus, certain disorders of the nervous system, or certain drugs. Often however, no cause can be found although a viral infection is suspected in some. Usually, the physician prescribes medication to stimulate the stomach to contract. The purpose of the gastroparesis diet is to reduce symptoms and maintain adequate fluids and nutrition. There are three steps to the diet.

STEP 1 DIET consists of liquids, which usually leave the stomach quickly by gravity alone. Liquids prevent dehydration and keep the body supplied with vital salts and minerals.

STEP 2 DIET provides additional calories by adding a small amount of dietary fat — less than 40 gm each day. For patients with gastroparesis, fatty foods and oils should be restricted, because they delay stomach emptying. However, patients at the Step 2 level are usually able to tolerate this amount.

STEP 3 DIET is designed for long-term maintenance. Fat is limited to 50 gm per day, and fibrous foods are restricted, because many plant fibers cannot be digested.

.
I’m terribly sorry to hear that you’re going through all of this, Puck. I hope that your surgery will provide you with quick relief!

Oh friend it’s been so long since we talked! (I’m Tobi btw). I did some research and, I don’t know if this stuff has already been said, but here’s what I found.

White bread, bagels, English muffins, arrowroot cookies, soda crackers, cucumbers, and well-cooked eggplant, squash, and zucchini, but skin them first and then remove any seeds. Replace necessary nutrients, especially Vitamin B-12, iron and calcium, through food or supplements. Seafood, liver, fortified cereals, clams, pork, liver, fortified grains and blacktrap molasses. Dairy products and tofu are perfect for replacing calcium and add protein to your diet. applesauce, canned fruits or vegetables without skin, eggs, mild cheese and cottage cheese.

Also I saw that oatmeal is on the avoid list.

You may be able to find more information or advice from someone who also has the same condition. I found this person http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments… It’s only 13 days old, so the woman is likely to still be active on the site and respond to questions.

Some good-sounding advice in this thread from the same page: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments…

Take your vitamins
Fresh squeezed vegetable/fruit juices from a juicer (Jack lalane juicer recommended)
Flavored popsicles
lifesavers

Hi, sweetheart. Oatmeal actually makes me feel horrible because of the fiber. So do many smoothies for the same reason.

Some foods you might try:

* Tuna from a can, in water (not oil)
* Salmon (it has some fat, so be very, very careful)
* Boiled egg (I can eat the yolks most days, but best to eat only the whites at first)
* Chex Cinnamon (low in fiber, pretty low in fat - 2 grams, and it tastes great)
* Frosted Cheerios (I’ve heard they’re lower in fiber than regular Cheerios)
* Instead of oatmeal, try cream of wheat or perhaps oatmeal baby food (the apple cinnamon oatmeal flavors taste great and have almost no fiber)
* Fat-free hot dogs on white bread or multigrain bread (pick a low-fiber variety)
* Apples without the peels, or applesauce
* If you can handle fat of any kind, peanut butter can be a life saver

I read the blogs My Broken Stomach (http://www.mybrokenstomach.com/) and Gastroparesis and Gastronomy (http://gastroparesisandgastronomy.wordpress.com/). They have SOOO many recipes.

Also, you can join the big GP Yahoo group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/…

Avoid Kellogg’s cereals unless you read the label really carefully. They add fiber to almost everything now - it makes me feel sick both mentally and physically.

I hope that helps!

Also remember that Jello is basically just sugar. The gelatin provides no nutrition, so you’re basically just eating sugar. Not the best thing to eat, and it’s better to eat something like applesauce or drink juice instead.

Hi. I wondered if you could explain this. I have recently increased my fiber intake (and have been eating a bowl of cereal most mornings), and now some days I feel kind of depressed, which is kind of new for me. Is there some sort of connection I should be aware of? I thought maybe it was just coincidence…

I have gastroparesis just like Puck does, though I think mine is milder. It makes me feel sick because I cannot eat, for instance, Apple Jacks, which were previously my favorite cereal. Because of the GP, if I eat Apple Jacks I get nauseated for a couple of hours.

I am sorry that you are suffering from this condition! You could ask your doc if you would benefit from a a jejunostomy tube which is a feeding tube that delivers the nutrition directly to the small intestine which is where the nutrients are absorbed anyway. This does not have to be permanent, there is always the possibility of getting it removed once the underlying condition is dealt with. Good luck!

Gastroparesis, in most cases, is forever, so the “underlying condition” will never be dealt with. If someone gets a feeding tube, usually it’s not temporary, because either they’re losing weight and are in the hospital and don’t need a tube to wear around home, or they have such bad GP that they can’t leave the hospital, ever, without it. It’s sort of a situation where either you need it forever or you don’t need it at all.

DaftPuck,
I’m fairly new participant on help.com, so I don’t know you well. I can however, relate to your plight. I’m very familiar with diet issues.
When it was suggested to blend my food, I thought “Yech!” I like meat, so how would I accommodate that choice? I learned that some meat could be blended, such as fish, chicken, even hamburger. Believe it or not, there’s not al lot of compromising when it comes to taste.
It’s just not “presentation quality” when you first begin, but it can be done! But, if you don’t eat meat, no problem.
No on the sweet potatoes. Something I have come to enjoy is grits. I add some crumbled bacon to it. I love cheese but rarely have it. As you may well know one of the conditions of gastroparesis can be a damaged vagus nerve inhibiting digestion in the small intestine.
We enjoy food so much that we think we are deprived. Of course, the other side of that is the diet can be quite healthy. You get used to it.
I am curious about the surgery you have opted for. Will the bypass be somewhat external and have you read or discussed botox treatment with your doctor? I am interested in learning more about these treatments if you feel like sharing.
I somehow think you are quite young. It doesn’t change anything of course but I wish you to be healthy.
Do you have family or people supporting you?
Good Luck and keep us “enlightened” if you would.

Okay, DUDE (not sure if you’re a guy or a girl). I’m sorry to snap but it’s REALLY. NOT. FUNNY.

I can probably never again eat my favorite cereal in the world without physically wanting to throw up so badly that I gag myself, can’t throw up, and end up taking a pill that puts me to sleep for hours and carries a risk of neurological side effects.

That is to say, a cereal I loved that used to be safe to eat and fiber free now makes me sick, and I will probably never eat it again.

It’s not funny. It’s not amusing. It has nothing to do with Wal-Mart.

Hey Puck - I found this website, there are some good responses to the poster on this site about the issue, and also additional references.

http://www.everydayhealth.com/forums/…

It must be frustrating, I have looked and there is a lot of vague stuff and stuff about what to avoid, but not a great deal about what you can have. I think there just isnt a great deal known about it yet. Other advice suggests speaking to a dietician, and it having to be a trial and error thing, but ensuring you eat 6 meals a day. Sorry I cant help more, but the link above did look good.

I somehow think you are quite young. It doesn’t change anything of course but I wish you to be healthy.
Do you have family or people supporting you?
Good Luck and keep us “enlightened” if you would.

Hi, Penguino.

Thanks for your suggestions, however, I probably won’t be grinding up any meat in the near future as I am a vegetarian. I am 25 years of age and I do have both my parents and my brother supporting me. As far as the surgery is concerned, it isn’t going to be that invasive. It is going to be done laproscopically (through a few small incisions.) I have not discussed the botox treatment option as none of my doctors, the one in town and the one in Seattle, have brought it up as an option. I have basically been told my options for treatment, that my insurance will cover (in this order), were: meds, pacemaker, surgery on the stomach. Thanks for your insight!

HELLO Penguino..sorry to come like this to answer to ur shout… actually its a local. frequently used home remedy that is commonly used to treat these kinds of ailments in our locality… it can be used in various ways… like u can take it as mint tea too… yeah fresh mint leaves is more benificial then the dried ones… we make what we call it as “chatni” that is we make a paste of mint leaves by just grinding it to a thick paste…. wid some fresh green chillies added wid a pinchful of salt to taste… u can used this as per ur wish and its not only good to ur stomach but it tastes good too… u can also make it juice and have it… u grind it and mix it wid a glass ful of water.. strain the residue and add few drops of lemon juice sprikle some black salt…. it tastes really good.. it cools ur stomach and reduces ur stomach ailments very readily……. so try and get the result… goodluck….

It was just the Apple Jacks stuff. I’m trying the General Mills version.

Maybe if you get it somewhere besides Walmart it won’t make you cry. …lol

Oh sorry…was not trying to make light of your situation. There are also things I can no longer eat that I once loved, so I can relate. In the past year, I have also survived a heart attack and cancer, and have learned, as a result, that having a sense of humor helps get (some of) us through the rough spots in life. I suppose it’s not the same for anyone, so again, I am sorry if my humor offended you somehow. I am not so daft as to not realize that Walmart had nothing to do with it. …And, for the record, I am neither guy nor girl. I am a lady.

It’s okay. I’m sorry I snapped. I’m sure someday I’ll be able to laugh about it. My diagnosis is recent and changes a lot, and I have good days and bad. Yesterday was a bad day. I’m glad you’re alive, by the way. :-)

I’m really sorry to hear that. :-/ The Metamucil make gastroparesis symptoms worse, unfortunately. Personally, I ate a jar of baby food with 4 grams of fiber several hours ago, and I’m still stuffed full and suffering from heartburn. UGH.

So sorry, Puck. I sometimes have a touch of that too.

1) the stomach won’t empty when things are clogged down below. Consider switching to a raw diet (this would involve fiber), perhaps in the form of green smoothies: http://www.rawfamily.com/ http://www.greensmoothierevolution.com/ http://www.greensmoothiegirl.com/

Also consider a series of colonic irrigations. They are actually really cool.

2) the vagus nerve, which is said to be important in stomach-emptying, is something to research, as is partial cramping of the digestive system starting with the esophagus which I have experienced occasionally when my adam’s apple goes out of joint! Weird stuff. :)

The vagus nerve is also implicated in depression! Interesting, eh? Good thing to read up on.

3) try lying down on your back and tickling your stomach just to the left of your belly-button. Just very lightly tickle with your fingertips or nails. There’s some sort of valve there, and it gets too tight. Also breathe, and relax.

4) jiggle the line along your ribs just under your right breast - this activates the liver, and can cause instantaneous shifting of the contents of your digestive tract and relaxation of the whole system.

5) drink lots of water throughout the day. Occasionally add a tiny bit of salt. Read the book “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water” by Dr. Batmanghelidj: http://www.watercure.com/ or http://www.amazon.com/Your-Bodys-Many… Very important book. Amazing book.

If you could find a chiropractor who practices kinesiology to help you with this, the answer may really lie here: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi… It’s about the vagus nerve by a man who’s really studied it and my chiropractor used to adjust my stomach (un-pinching my vagus nerve) and solve a whole bunch of symptoms … yup, weird but true.

I will NOT re-consider surgery. I have been going through this pain and nausea for years with no relief. I have seen two different gastroenterologists in Seattle and one gastroenterologist in Spokane and they all have determined that I am a candidate for this surgery and that it is safe.

A touch of gastroparesis would strangle you, that’s like saying you have a touch of cancer. I’m sorry, but I am a bit skeptical when I hear claims of chiropractors helping patients with physical ailments such as gastroparesis. I will buy that they can help a patient with back pain or something of that nature but I have a hard time believing that they can help a person ’solve’ their gp problems.

I’m with you, Puck, about chiropractors. I LOVE my chiro, but he’s for my back, not my tummy, and other than an overall decrease in tension and back strain I see no difference when I need to see him and right after I’ve seen him. (The reduced tension helps digestion, though. Puck, you might consider getting a deep-tissue massage - it might help with blood flow and digestion because stress reduces blood flow to the stomach and sends it to the leg and arm muscles, etc.) The raw food diet also doesn’t sound smart. It might be something to try if you had mild GP, but yours is severe enough to warrant surgery.

I’m so excited for you! Let us know how it goes, honey!

Not much. He feels bad for me and all but there’s not much he can really do. A few weeks ago he sent me for a consult in another town to see if I met the criteria for a gastric pacemaker. I do and will be getting the surgery at the end of march. Until then I basically have to survive on what limited foods I can eat. My diet has actually been reduced even further. I can only handle boost and smoothies. It sucks but I’m coping…I guess.

This is it! I go in for the surgery tomorrow. I have to wake up i>really /i> early to have it done. No food tonight or tomorrow morning (not that that is really an issue) and then I stay for one day and I will be discharged to a nearby hotel and then slowly I will be able to eat real food again.

Thanks, everyone for all your suggestions!

Puck, I was JUST about to shout you about this! I’m so happy for you!!! Please keep me updated!

Well, perhaps the first real meal. Once we’re sure it works.

I read a story where a girl had a hamburger. :-)

I’m out of surgery; have been for about 5hrs, and I hurt like hell. They’re giving me narcotic pain relievers but it barely touches my pain. I get to go back to the hotel tomorrow, hopefully by then I’ll be able to walk w/o getting too outta breath from the pain.

I have a feeling that after this I’ll be jealous of your ability to eat foods. :-)

Good to hear it’s done! Hope you make a quick recovery! When will you be able to eat solid foods again?

I’m home now and dealing with a minimal amount of pain now. I had my first real meal with no problems. I think things are looking up. :)
