Advice please.

My Dad is an alcoholic, heavy smoker, depressed but won’t seek help. His health is getting worse. There are problems in my extended family and my mother is the peacekeeper. My grandparents are also in and out of the hospital with their own health problems. Our family pets have passed away this year. One of my siblings is seriously ill. They are young and it can be cancer. My other sibling is pregnant but lives far away so we can’t help her. Trying to keep our family together and take care of my Dad is putting strain on my mom and affecting her health. I’m a med student. Trying to listen when I can and do help when I can. I have my own health problems at the moment. What can I do to help? Is there anything besides for supporting and listening? I feel like I should do more.

believe it or not nobody’s going to give you anything you can’t handle. just take one step at a time, day by day, supporting and listining, is doing a lot wither it shows right now, don’t give up hope. remember you can’t take care of others if your sick, get your health problems taken care of, and then deal with theres. i with you the best of luck!!!

Sounds like your father’s alcoholism is placing everyone under so much stress that it is effecting your health. Start with helping dad get help if he is ready. Do a family interventiion if necessary. This would be a good place to start.

We tried to help my father. He is going to alcoholics anonymous, but we still find bottles of hard liquor around the house. We try to talk and support him but he won’t open up and doens’t think anything is wrong with him. If we tried a family intervention he already thinks we are ganging up on him. He sees himself as not as educated as me and my siblings because he works at a car factory. We all believe he is intelligent and think he is amazing, but he feels down on himself. We try to include him with everything, but due to the effects of alcoholism, etc., his personality is changing. His memory is going and he becomes very argumentative and irritable. Lab tests show nothing as a cause for this.

I think the fact that you are on here helping other people with their problems suggests that you’re a good person who wants to help - but this can be its own curse too.
It sounds as though you’re doing as much as is reasonably possible but sometimes I think you just have to recognise that doing more would be akin to martyring yourself. The most important thing for you is you. There’s no point beating yourself up over your family - sometimes all you can do is pick the pieces up when they need picking up.

Essentially I think I’m saying that you have to look after yourself sometimes, which is harder to do, but essential in the long run if you’re going to be there when you’re really needed.

Support, listen, be there for the emergencies. Your health is the most important thing, cos if you’re ill you can’t help anyone else.

I thought my problems were bad, but gosh, Im sorry you have to go through this. Talk to your family doctor about it. That always gets me on the right track.

Thehappycanuc, some of the family problems like your pregnant sister who lives far away, at her own choosing we presume? Call her or write to her, let her know you love her and offer her a listening ear or shoulder to cry on, perhaps just share her excitement about her coming birth. Your grandparent, same thing, visits to the hospital or their home, let them know you love them, call when you can. Your dads’ physical and mental symptoms are a part of the alcoholism. Have you and your family been to Alonon meetings? Have you read books on alcoholism and codependency? The sister with the possible cancer, are we talking possibilities or probabilities? To launch into a cancer journey before it is necessary is not a good thing. Way too much stress, especially when it turns out unwarranted. You get to the doctor and tell them what you have been experiencing symptom and stress wise and get treatment.

Well put everything. Thanks candp. My sister lives far away as of her own choosing. My grandparents and family live about four hours away so it’s not easy to go home and see them, unfortunately. I call when I can though. We’re thinking of going to Alonon meetings. It is just hard to find time. I am researching the disease. Thanks for the reminder to keep on top of that. As for my other sister, she has several medical conditions unfortunately that puts in her in a lot of pain, severe depression, and other problems. Here current condition is a possible risk of cancer… and the unfortunate probability of it becoming cancer in a decade or so. I’m getting tested for all of my health concerns and trying not to take things too heavily at once. It’s just that all of this stuff plus first year med is a bit much. lol. At least I love school and as an outlet I volunteer with pediatrics when I can. It makes me happy to help kids :-) I guess I have to accept what I can and cannot control. blech… no easy.

We know it’s hard but try to stay focused on you. Life happens. If there is something you can do, wonderful. If there is nothing you can do, accept it. In your future line of work that piece of wisdom will come in very handy, we think. What do you do with the kids?

I put up a post earlier. Didn’t know too much to say. I’m only first year and I’ve heard second can be quite tough. It’s rough to lose your passion for it. I don’t think I could get through the program, along with everything else, AND not have that motivation. yikes! I just suggested the councelling services they offer. Most schools, as far as I know, offer some special ones geared towards med students, well at least at my school anyways.

Why not try the Herbalife Products.
Herbalife is the best nutrition and health company in the world right now.
Go to www.healthmall7.com and you can look at their products and catalogue, there is also contact information. They can defenetely help with your health. Also, since you are going to med school, you might be interrested to know how these products work. They have got 10 of the top 25 doctors and scientists in the world, one of them with a Nobel Prize, developing their products. They have 10 of them!!! You might be interrested in these products if you would like to become a doctor or nutritionist.
I got amazing results when I started using Herbalife.
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion of Herbals… but I don’t think they will help me with these problems. People need to be careful which kinds and how much herbals they use because they can be dangerous, especially if mixed with certain kinds of medications. Who are these top 10 doctors working for Herbalife products?

Sorry for not checking my posts too often, I just don’t have enough time. I sense that you need more information about what Herbalife has to offer, and since you are studying medicine, you might find this information useful (maybe and maybe not).

Yes I agree, not all herbs are good with medication, which is why we personalize a nutrition program that fits everyone’s basic needs. Herbs (like green tea) are important for providing antioxidants. These are necessary to counter-attack the oxidants that we eat and breathe everyday. Nature did not intend us to breathe pollution, eat toxins, or live under the cancerous sun sure to holes in the ozone layer and global warming. These days we are eating and what technology provides us, and not what nature intended. But if we find that someone cannot have any kind of herbs (which hasn’t occurred to me, and I don’t think it will), then I will give him or her products that do not contain natural herbs, only vitamins, minerals, nutrients and essential soy and whey proteins.

I have lots of people who are taking so many types of medication, and they all drink the Herbal Concentrate green tea that we provide for them to burn fat like crazy, but also to provide proper antioxidants. Not all the Herbalife Products include herbs, some are simply protein drinks, or vitamin supplements, even outer nutrition and targeted products such as health for the heart and health for the digestive system.

We also have targeted products for specific body organs and functions. For example, our heart health products target the 4 key indicators of heart health, cholesterol, triglycerides, homocysteine, and oxidant stress. For example, by including 100% pure Neptune Krill Oil (NKO), we give the heart a healthy source of EPA and DHA Omega-3 fatty acids, plant sterols, tocopherols, and other powerful antioxidants. We also give the heart essential softgels such as Herbalifeline and Tri-Sheild to protect the heart. We also enhance the circulatory system by providing Nitric Oxides at night when their natural production is at its lowest, which keeps the blood vessels flexible during the night to make it easier for the heart to pump blood and spread oxygen at night. When I started taking the Nitric Oxide element, I felt the difference the first day what I woke up in the morning feeling all nourished and refreshed!

Now our products don’t intend to cure disease, so they will not replace any medicine, and we are trained to know which products to give which individual. So amazing things start to happen when people become healthier. Some lost over 400 lbs of excess weight! They feel great. We have had diabetes patients tell us that they got off their perscription medication because our natural products worked. With the Help of Nobel Winning Proze Dr. Ignarro, we have products that give nutrition to the heart, and we have prevented and even reversed heart disease! I cannot imagine the look on those doctors when their patients blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels turn out to be amazing after just a few short weeks. Then we get referrals from these amazed doctors to help other people. Cancer patients have had smoother procedures because of the Herbalife vitamins, proteins, and nutrition plans.

The secret to the Herbalife products is the principle of cellular nutrition. this means to give every cell of the body the nutrition it needs to become healthier. Our protein shake together with the multivitamins provide a balanced healthy meal. Together with our digestive system products will provide powerful nutrition to the whole body. the value of 4 tablespoons of our basic nutritional shake has vitamins that equivelant of eating a 4000 calorie meal of the best foods available. After being on this shake for a few short days, you will not even believe how much weight people will lose and keep off, and they will gain so much energy and feel great!

If you are interrested to know the ingredients in our products, then you can download the product labels from the website www.healthmall7.com and read all the information there. Also in order to find out more about our scientists and doctors and our medical advisory board, we have the Herbalife Broadcast Network (HBN). Information on our products are always available, and yes, not every product is good for everyone, which is why it is important that every single individual has his own nutrition plan to maximize his weight loss capabilities and give him the best nutrition in the world!

We have products for men and women, something for bones, muscles, stress, anxiety, and even nutrition for your eyes to fight night blindness and macular degeneration. Also skin care product for anti-aging with vitamins A, C and E for your skin.

But you know, being the best company in the world means that we will get the most criticism from our competitors. So we don’t pay attention to that because we have proven that our products work 100% of the time for 100% of the people who take them over and over and over again. Considering just the weight loss aspect, I have loads of before and after pictures that are dazzling. I am saving lives and I am proud of what I do. But there is a lot of doubt in weight loss products right now and diets in general because they usually promise something that doesn’t come true. It is usually a small secret like eliminating all sugars of fats or something like that. But personally I don’t have time to deal with skepticism because I am so busy telling the story of good nutrition to the people who need it the most. With today’s diets, wellness is a myth. Herbalife has got the perfect solution! So if someone is serious about changing the quality of their health and adding years to their lives, then we work with them, even if they are skeptical, because we know that they will turn 180 degrees the first day when they eat the products. A few years ago, Amy responded to an Herbalife newspaper ad that said ‘Drink and Shrink’. She was skeptical, her husband did not want to spend the money, and so on. But after she lost more than 50 lbs, she was so excited! So our products defenetely work. She also decided to join our company and she went all the way to our President’s Team in 4 years. So what if it takes 4 years, I don’t know anyone outside or Herbalife who is earning 20,000 a month. So it does not matter how long it took. But believe me because we provide the best opportunity for the average person to achieve financial freedom, we also get criticism from others. But we just are too busy training the people who really need our support whether to make money or to improve their health that we cannot pay any attention to criticism. It is also a way of life. Fact is the if you don’t have enough criticism then you are not doing enough business! This is a fact of life. But it is only the people who have the courage to try the products that will receive the benefits. It is only the people who start the business that will start earning money, and this is how we screen our customers and know how serious they are. I mean my email fills up everyday with people who really need those products otherwise their health will never improve.

Anyway, I think I wrote a lot, so I will just send it without checking for spelling mistakes. I hope this info helped and I wish you luck in your medical career.
