I think these days you need to go way more hard-core than that.
Christianity is spelled with a capital C just like Islam has a capital I because its out of respect for the religion. Based on what context you use Hell depends on the capitalization. If you use it only as a proper name or in the context of religion then it’s caps. Otherwise, lowercase.
Usually you go to Hell if you commit suicide because you disrupt the plan that God had for you and you performed one of the ultimate sins. According to western religions it’s evil but I don’t know how eastern religions treat it.
Oh yeah, blahblahblahmonke, if you want to be sent to Hell then just be yourself. Don’t believe in God, don’t follow any religion and do what ever you want. You’ll go to Hell for sure then.

Hmmm … so you’d go to Hell anyway, just for not being religious? That seems a little harsh. I’m quite … ummm … moral, would that not count for a thing???
I think in Islam it’s considered an even bigger evil than it is in Christianity, but I don’t know about any other religions (and what I do know comes from GCSE short course RS … so … y’know).

Well, if you would outline your definite religious beliefs for us, that would really help us answer your question. I personally believe that suicide is an immoral act, but that if there is an all-loving God, he will forgive us for everything, by definition. I also believe that an all-loving, omnipotent God could not create something less than perfect, including humankind. Humankind is obviously imperfect, therefore if there is a God, he is not both all-loving and omnipotent, and possibly neither. Either way, I refuse to worship such a being.
Unfortunately the only people who get to go to heaven without needing to accept Christ are children and mentally challenged people. But sometimes even those people can go to hell. It depends on their age of awareness. Basically, once someone knows the difference between right and wrong, and knows that doing wrong is … well … wrong, then they can go to hell if they don’t accept Jesus as their savior. If someone doesn’t have the mental capacity to determine that difference then they get a free pass. So I’m pretty sure that animals go to heaven too. Even cockroaches.
Oh yeah, God would never have suicide as part of your lifeplan. He might have you sacrifice yourself by jumping a suicide bomber and saving a group of kids (because one of those kids might grow up to be the next Billy Graham or your example might end suicide bombers forever, etc.) but he wouldn’t have you slit your wrists in a bathtub. I believe that if you are a Christian before you commit suicide then he will forgive you for the act of suicide but he’ll just be a little disappointed in you when you get to heaven.
I can only think of one other “ultimate sin” (btw, I didn’t mean to make it seem like their was a huge list) and that’s preaching that Satan has done the work of Christ, or something similar to that. Can’t remember right now.
@ Kadoo: God may be an omnipotent, all-loving supreme being but he still has rules. He gave us free choice so that we aren’t robots and so with that free choice we can sin against him or we can serve him. He will forgive us of everything as long as we choose to swallow our pride and accept him as the ruler of our hearts and minds. If you wanna talk about it, shout me or something.
You go to hell if you are an unforgiven sinner. If, at any time in your life, you come to Christ, confess yourself a sinner, repent, and ask Him to save you, then you become a child of God. No child of God goes to hell. You have been forgiven for all the sins that you commit in your lifetime, and you are cleansed from the sin nature which causes you to sin. Christians should not happily continue to sin without any struggle against it, but Christians do still sin.
People may commit suicide because they are mentally ill or in a very dire situation. Suicide is not what God wants you to do, but if you belong to Him, you are forgiven and will never go to hell. If you do not belong to Him, you will go to hell when you die, regardless of how you died.

Just don’t think that life is bad. Count your blessings. There’s always someone who’s willing to trade places with you. I’m a Christian I belive that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins. It’s not to say that I do what I want,that I’m perfect, or people are always perfect towards me; I’m trying to say that no one has a perfect life. Everybody has something to deal with no matter who you are. Suicide, or hurting another person or people is negative. Have you ever thought of any positive solutions? If suicide is you problem you should seek professional help. There’s someone waiting to share your burdened heart. I f it’s a family member or friend, you should tell them to seek professional help. the consequence of suicide is a function of the reason for the act. Under some circumstances it can be the correct thing to do. If the body’s genetic profile is lacking in robustness and functionality death will result in an evolutionary correction of the lacking genetic components. Religion puts a major bottle neck on evolution. One must be clear and focused on the next life. Suicide is only used as a last resort. This is what i beleive. Remember what doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger!!

If someone commits suicide they will go to hell. If you die and have any sin at all on you then you will go to hell. It is one of the ten commandments that thou shalt not kill. If you kill yourself then that sin will be on you when you die and obviously you can`t have time to ask for forgiveness. Suicide should never ever be used as a way out of a situation or problem. This world and the devil is full of evil and lies and will fool you into thinking your taking an easy out. But people hell is real and it will be more painful and sorrowful then this earth. Shroye you can’t possibly believe that if there is any sin on you when you die that you go to hell. I’m sorry but you couldn’t even come close to asking for repentance for every sin in your life at any oint in your life except to say fogive me for everything that I have done or will do in my life, and you can do that before you pull the trigger. Thats way too many to actally remember. All you can do is trust in King Jesus and in Gods love for us. I mean I do believe that you have to whole heartedly try to live a life that pleases God and practice elf control, but your still gonna stumble. I can’t really tell you where you would go if ou commited suicide and I think it’s foolish to try and think that we actually know what God would do. I try not to think too much about what I think God would do if I did this or that. It will eat you up because we will always fall short of his Glory. ABSOLUTELY NO WHERE in the Bible does it say “If you kill yourself, you go to hell.” Everyone dies. Some people die of physical illnesses, and others ( like people who commit suicide) die of mental disorders. Yes, it is in the ten commandments “thou shalt not kill,” but there are also nine other commandments that we all break, often daily. Does this mean we are all going to hell now? Not at all. If you are a child of God your sins are PAID IN FULL, no matter what you do. Now, I am not in ANY way saying that suicide is okay, in most cases it’s a terribly selfish thing to do. But it does not ******** to hell. Being an unforgiven sinner does. The origin of the common belief that people go to hell after suicide actually came from the catholic church. we have to look at the bible for this answer, i love me some Jesus, and it doesnt say where you go. one way or the other. there are a lot of ppl that killed themself in the bible but you have to pick it up and ready it. its one of those things God didnt say anything about. there is too much other stuff to worry about. just think of the ppl you leave behind tht you could have helped not be to the point your at. just think!. I think I can show you verses which suggest that it is a sin to kill yourself. First God tells us not to murder. Period. He does not say don’t murder anyone who doesn’t want to die, He says don’t murder. Here is my point. Is it okay to kill someone if during the fight with them, they come out and tell you to kill them their life sucks anyway? Of course not, it is still murder in God’s eyes. So does it make any difference just because you want to die? I don’t think so. Now let me give you a few of those verses:
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV) [19] Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; [20] you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
(1 Corinthians 3:16-17 NIV) [16] Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? [17] If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God&’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
I think those are pretty clear. If you are a Christian your life and for that matter your body are no longer your own, they were bought with the blood of Christ. Here are two more passages:

i beleive in god with all my heart and wonder so many things about aterlife.I beleive that we are all gods children and he loves us all. God forgives everyone. God does not want to send us to hell. The devil drags us down when we make sins. But however if we ask god for forgiveness we will get pulled up again because you are realising that you have made a mistake. And besides God is more powerfull than the Devil and thats why you should ask for forgivesness.If you make alot of sins and dont ask to be forgived then the devil will send you to hell.I beleive that if you kill yourself its a sin because god says its a sin to kill.And also if you kill yourself its not being thanfull for the life god gave us. i have a friend and he recently took his own life away. he was a great person. made everyone laugh. and he even got along with teachers. when one of my teachers would get a headache he would go to a gas station during school and get her a coke or anything that would help her. no one really knows why he did it. but i really want to find out if under some circumstances can u do that and still go to heaven? i think this question will be bothering me for the rest of my life. and im 15 years old so that will be for a long time. i just want someone that knows what they’re talking about to answer my question.

If God is real in the end, and Hell exists, I guess my future is going to be filled with torture. I am sorry for everyone that has ever committed suicide, for what ever reason they have. I know I have logic on my side with my decision to do so, but I still would like to believe that there is someone to shepherd all of the people that had blessed lives and never got upset. But what I do is so that others may sustain themselves off of the resources that I waste. The future is going to record many people taking their lives in a very similar fashion, sometimes it is just for the best when you give up and move out of the way for other people.

I don’t think anyone who commits suicide is in their right mind. :( I lost a good friend last friday to it. Extremely wonderful person, but inside something was killing and eating away her. She was being treated for depression and possibly other mental conditions, apparently unsucessfully. I know what it’s like to go through trial and error medicines. It took two years to get mine right. And there were times i wanted to jump off a bridge as well. Those have to also be considered. I don’t think He wanted anyone to feel that way, and I believe HE loves us ALL. I have to believe that in a situation where you are unsucessfully treated, you are forgiven. I want to believe. I miss her so dearly. So in response to the question, I don’t think their can be any definite answer, and just because some Pope decided to make the rule, kill yourself -> go to hell, it doesn’t make it Gods rule. Who are we to know if everything in the bible is actually transcribed perfectly, forgive me if it is, I just know how hard it is for me to actually remember conversations. But then again, divine intervention can implant the entire book in the deciples mind i am sure. We want to believe suicide doesn’t send you to hell, we need to in many cases. Our loved ones are our loved ones, and the promise of seeing them when it is our time is all we can hope for.

for my understanding i am a christian and i believe that god created a hell for the devil and all of the fallen angles that were with Satan. suicide is a selfish act…if you don’t think it will hurt others, you would be wrong (it hurts them more than you know, unless you know someone who has committed suicide) I believe that the terminally ill have that right without reservation. If you believe in Heaven then you believe in Hell and vice-versa…from my understanding Satan (the devil) does not want you to know that he is in the room with you and can and will sabotage any danger to his will. From what I understand, God gave man Free will to make his own decisions. I pray there is a Hell so that we can have a Heaven (is it worth the gamble?) I do believe that you can not have good without bad (how else would you know the difference?) My understanding of Christianity is one of servitude, forgiveness, and love. Forgive yourself, love yourself, share yourself. A failure is not someone that falls down, but someone that won’t get up and keep trying. We all stumble and fall…have you tried Religion (not Church necessarily) have you tried sharing through fellowship (sharing with others with similar struggles and ideas), can you have the faith.
The first step is to admit that there is a higher power, the next is to admit that you have a problem (that’s bigger than you can control or handle)(this does not mean you are weak or a screw up), then hand the problem over to the higher power and then seek fellowship (there really is power in numbers)

A lot of these people don’t understand. They don’t understand the emotional pain, the hate, giving a million chances and getting hurt everyday. I’ve had IBS for 5 years and have a terrible stomach ache everyday, with only midnight hospital visits, IV’S and morphine to stop the pain. I have a dad who has cheated on my mom, favorites my brother, screams and yells at us, has a record for abuse, smokes, drinks, and publically diminishes us. I have a mom, who is turning into a lot like my dad, what’s worse is that she wasn’t always mean, and i miss the mom she used to be. They are going through divorce, he is taking everything away. My mom is never around, she’s either at work, or online doing homework. I have a little brother that always lies, and loves to make me feel bad about myself by calling me fat and making fun of my nose. I have a bipolar sister, who publically humiliates me in anyway possible. I’m incredibly nice to people at school and often hide behind a smile, many acquaintences but few friends, and whenever i try to extend friendship, i get rejected for some misunderstood reason. Im constantly bullied at school for being different, ever since kindergarden. Im sexually harrassed, and often feel stuck. the emotional scarring will never go away.
But . . .
I have strength. I have a beautiful passion for music, even though noone takes me seriously in it yet because they haven’t heard me. I have one girl as a friend who has been there for me through it all, I have a big optimism for the future, i am a very smart person, deep and insightful, anyone i talk to tells me how complex my mind is. I have a warm bed and a nice house, and my family i know cares about what happens to me, they just do a poor job of showing it sometimes, i have dreams of being able to share myself with the world, i am a christian, i trust god will find someway EVENTUALLY to make it better, sometimes i feel like im tested because i will need to stubborness to keep moving forward in the future, i think about all the things i can be and the places i can go,
and all the negative stuff still dwells, i can’t promise it goes away, but there’s something that sort of ticks inside me and it tells me that this is a test or phase, and in the future everyone will know my name, but no matter who you become or where you end up in the world, people DO regret what they did to you. They can’t take it back, but one day when you die, at the right time, you know that you lived your life the way you’re supposed to.

I dont see why you would go to hell. If it is caused by depression then you wont. Depression is an illness. So that is almost like saying you will go to hell because you have cancer. If you believe in God, and try to live your life but just cant go on…then I dont think you will go to hell.

I too have struggled with this question for many years, especially today. I am a single mom but my children live with my parents because I can’t handle them on my own everyday. I keep them 50 percent of the time but I know this isn’t enough, they deserve better from me. Every man in my life has used me and ends up leaving me with the same tired line, I’m just not ready or I don’t want to raise someone elses kids. I am a reservist in the Army, I would like to go active duty so I could have a reliable income but I can’t because I’m a single mom, I came in the Army after I was a single parent so the rules are a little different than if I would have been in the Army and then had them. I feel like I’m a failure in everything that I do and the question I ask is how many more times do I have to go through this before this life is finally over and I can have some peace? I know that my problems are not as terrible as someone elses but they are mine and I am the one that is living through it and to me my life is a bitter disappointment that doesn’t appear to ever be getting better. I am lonely, I feel trapped in this cycle and no matter what I am the one who has to deal with this, no one else. I have always believed that Grace covers all your sins when you belong to God, that is the whole point of salvation, why would God write that no sin is greater than another if one really was? I also know that if I killed myself that life would just go on for everyone else and that yeah they might initially be sad that my life ended that way but soon enough they would forget about it and get on with their own lives. My children would be more affected than most everyone else but they are young and would also move on with their lives, probably growing up hating me and blaming me for every problem they have but they will probably do that anyway! I’m hesitant bc I’m just really scarred and the “what if” question still gives me hope. What if this all does get better and things finally do start working out? I have been holding myself here on this earth with that what if hope since I was 9 and I am now 28 so I’m really starting to think it never will. No matter how hard I try this crap just goes on and on and on. I just wish I had the courage to get it over with. I am getting there though, maybe I can finally stop being a failure then!

The answer is and always will be no. “It is by grace we are saved and not by our works so that no man may boast”. “We are all sinners and all fall short of the glory of God” but as my pastor says “once saved always saved”. God’s love is unconditional. Only a human being would believe anything different because we ourselves are so use to holding grudes and counting sins that we can not even begin to imagine forgiveness as pure and cut as God’s.

God is all forgiving, merciful beyond anything we can imagine. I think(just me my opinion really doesn’t matter right)if someone has mental problems and can’t really think properly and they take their own life rather than someone who has full capacity and is killing themselves to get back at someone or some other horrible reason to knowingly cause someone heartache. I know of several people who have killed themselves, some were beyond depressed others thought that they had no way out of their drug problem so they end it.
I don’t know if God sends them to hell when what they were trying to escape was hell. Who knows?

Look in Revelations. There is Hell, which is like jail where all who did not accept Christ and then there is Gahena, which can be likened to prison. After the Great White Throne judgement those in hell shall be called up to answer for thier sins. If you get sent to Gahena, then it is all over

I do know the way to the father is through the son, and the way to the son JESUS, and that consists of admitting you are a sinner saved by grace and confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and committing your life to Christ. The key word is MOUTH… God was verbal at the beginning. He spoke things into existance. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and God is the Word” I’m saying all of this to say, if you kill yourself, how will you ever ask God’s forgiveness. Satan’s job is to deceive us and rob us of our joy and love. Love is a crucial element. You must love God ad Christ loves the Church, then he will teach you how to love yourself. Almost everybody who has had a near death experience (being committed dead for a period of time and then reviving.) from suicide, they experience a hell like place where they feel very lonely and everything is dark. So, when one is in THAT sort of conscious mind, there is a hell. Although when you are living, your mind (consciousness) can create a hell out of reality. Everyone’s saying how suicide is a selfish thing…hurting others,etc. What about the person thinking about suicide…he/she obviously is in way more pain than any of them. I think the only selfish ones are the close family members or friends who DON’T notice a change in that person. You make the person committing suicide look like it’s their fault. And that their throwing God’s gift away. Well if it’s a crappy gift(life) I would throw it away too. Nothing is good about rape,murder,obesity,sickness,abuse etc. All these acts happen because the world isn’t an equal place. If God was soo great he would’ve known to create it equally.IT’S NOT FAIR. Christ abolished sin and death, so the only “hell” I could think of would be the place where a person would be influenced to want to do that in the first place. It sounds like that would be an evil or untoward influence that would come under Luke 9:1. I was with my son when he took his own life. He was 21, intoxicated, behind a locked door with a double paned glass window. I could not get the door open. He had a history of substance abuse along with alcohol abuse. Lost his dad when he was 15 and never got over it. Was in professional counseling throughout the years and had been clean for 7 months of everything. Had a relapse on this day with alcohol…He was a child of Christ and had been saved in his teenage years. When he took his own life he was in no state of mind to make a rational decision. He was in a blackout. I struggled with this all the time for months after his death. I have come to believe after speaking to two preachers and a priest that God is a very loving and forgiving God, and that anyone who takes their own life suffers a mental illness and God has a place in heaven for the mentally ill. If you suffer from depression, alcoholism, or substance abuse, please know you do mean something to someone, you are not alone.
