Stop help: Ads are following me, it’s creeping me out. - Help.com

Ads are following me, it’s creeping me out.

I went to Youtube and watched some Pokemon videos and now all the ads I get are Pokemon related like online RPG games and cheat codes. I then restarted my browser and went to a website about birds and now the same ad for bird feed is following me all across the internet! How can I stop this from happening?

Yes they do this. Websites will use things called “cookeies” to store data about what you watch, do, click etc to fit adverts to your needs.
However this also saves passwords etc. If you really want this gone, look in your browsers settings and disable cookies, but it may remove passwords etc so be warned,

You need to disable cookies on your internet browser.

Most major websites with advertising download something called a “Tracking Cookie” that compiles a list of sites you’ve been to, and then sends that information to an automated program that tries to match advertising to your browsing habits.

It is, indeed, a very creepy thing.

Be aware though, if you disable cookies in your browser, you won’t be able to remained “logged in” to certain sites, like facebook, youtube, yahoo mail, or other sites with which you have an account.

It’s horrible. I went to see a jacket on a website, and was devasted that they didn’t have my size. Completely depressed I go to youtube, and they’re displaying that same jacket as an ad.

If you use gmail, your banner ads there are based off your email contents. Google scans them for content and generates ads based off your “interests”
Nothing can be done about those though :(

Yeah… you think that’s bad?

All four years of college, every time I used the computer lab, I kept getting ads for pornography, and breast implants, and Natural Male Enhancement, and “Meet local singles”. After I realized WHY those ads were appearing all the time, I started bringing those little alcohol sanitation wipes with me to the lab, and cleaned off the keys and mouse before using the computer.
