Computers help: What is a server? - Help.com

What is a server?

How can it help me? I am a photographer with about 5 terabytes of pictures scattered about in 15 external hard drives. I know nothing about servers and very little about computers but I would like all of my data in one spot. Someone Please Help?!?!?!?!?

A server is just a computer that multiple other computers can connect to for services like file hosting (to answer your specific question), or printing, access to the internet, or any other number of things.

Do you care whether your images are stored on a server that is on your physical premises, or are you considering servers that a dedicated company may host on your behalf, and you simply connect to via the internet?
