life help: I am a perfectionist. - Help.com

I am a perfectionist.

I created my own diet plan just for me, it has all the nutrients and calories that I need to maintain my best weight. My problem is, that I have to have the perfect day to start. I keep creating “perfect” days, but when I make a mistake on my diet, I have to start over…waiting until another perfect day to start. Please help me. My life is miserable, I know that I am a perfectionist and that my brain is all messed up, but I don’t know how to help myself.

Try to go see a therapist or talk to someone else you trust about it :) I hope I helped.

A counsellor could help you work through that and find the reasons why you need everything to be perfect. I myself have an issue with that, everything must be balanced and symmetrical… I just force myself to ignore things and stop counting everything etc…but Im older so I just think of it as my quirk :)
Think to yourself in the meantime…whats the worst that can happen if I just eat whatever? Will you explode or fade away? Nope, you’ll be fine. For some reason probably a fear of gaining weight and the issues attached to that you’ve convinced yourself you need a guaranteed plan. But…any diet relies on food intact, calorie and fat content etc…and exercise or activity for the day to burn those calories that are extra or whatever. You cannot guarantee how many exact steps you’ll take in any given day or the rate your body will burn off those calries for that given day so…logically a perfect day is impossible. If a friend offers you an apple and it’s not on your diet plan do you insult your friend and say omg no cant eat that, it’s not on my plan.
Life is unpredictable sweetie, you can never guarantee anything in it or control it, can cause bad stuff but can also cause amazingly good stuff…like meeting the man of your dreams or winning the lottery etc. Think of the great stuff that an imperfect day can bring you and enjoy life :)
