Why don’t Catholics celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Whoa! What am I talking about? Aren’t we somehow honoring ****. Valentine on February 14? Actually, the answer is no. In 1969 the Catholic Church dropped ****. Valentine’s Day from the Roman calendar of official, worldwide Catholic feasts. The reason has a lot to do with the fact that nobody is really certain about who is being celebrated - a total of seven possible candidates exist.

The truth is, the origin of Valentine’s Day is impossible to determine with any certainty. But the theories are pretty interesting. These three websites give the best explanations of the history behind Valentines Day.

Well, my headline was actually kind of a trick question. Thanks to Hallmark gift cards, EVERYONE celebrates Valentines. And in fact, some parishes, do observe the feast of St. Valentine. But like I said, it isn’t really official because a single St. Valentine can’t be identified as a actual person. St. Valentine is kind of like St. Christopher - another popular saint, who got taken off the list of official saints for being more legendary than historically real.

Hmm, I never realized that St. Valentine was Multiple Man in disguise. More research is needed!

I’m not sure why people like valentine’s so much, I never knew it had to do with a person or religion. I thought hall mark made valentine’s.

Only in Asia, Q Elizatron. The wikipedia link I gave has a good section on Valentines around the world. In Japan and Korea it is a commercially created holiday promoted by candy and card companies. Kind of like our Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Do you think it’s lame or are you one of the lovers of the day?

I tend to dislike it very much so.

I feel it’s over commercialized so it dims down the spirit of the holiday. Much like Christmas and Thanksgiving.

The story of Valentines Day begins during the heyday of the Roman Empire, which held a festival every February. This Lupercian Festival was held in honor of the God of Fertility and during the festivities young men would get to choose their mate. At the time marriage was a common occurrence, but when Claudius became Emperor he changed all of that. Fearing that men would refuse their duty to fight because they would not want to leave their wives behind, he outlawed all marriages. Young couples still fell in love though and still wished to marry and they took these desires to the Catholic Bishop Valentine who, understanding love, began to secretly marry couples. When Claudius found out, he had Valentine arrested and ordered put to death. While waiting in jail, Valentine began exchanging letters with the jailer’s daughter and soon had fallen in love with her. The day he was to be beheaded, he wrote her one last note and signed it: ‘From Your Valentine’.

In 496 A.D. Christianity had taken over Rome and Pope Gelasius outlawed the pagen Lupercian Festival. Knowing it’s popularity, he looked to replace it with something more ‘appropriate’ and set aside a day in February to honor the martyr St. Valentine. Even though in 1969 the church removed St. Valentines Day from it’s calendar of ‘official’ holidays, it is still widely celebrated today.

catholic schools don’t honor valentines day because its a holiday to not all people and they may feel guilty of honoring a holiday for half of your school and not the other half. but otherwise i’m only 14 so i’m just writing what i believe is true. i hope this may’ve helped you.
