One of my best friends won’t talk to anyone in our group of friends.

When we all departed to our respective schools last fall, he failed to keep in touch as often as everyone else did. When his mother passed away three months ago it got even worse; he would only talk to his girlfriend. Now he won’t talk to anyone, about anything, because he fears that we will ask how he’s doing/the topic of his mom will come up. How would you guys tackle this problem?

Let him know that you care.

Leave him alone. If he wants to talk, he knows your number.

He isn’t eating or sleeping well–at what point do we intervene to stop the cycle of degradation?

People in extreme mental anguish very often isolate themselves from the people who care about them the most.
The best thing you could do is not give up on him because the relationship seems unequal.
Is his dad still around? Do you know his girlfriend well?

Yeah, we forwarded our view of his situation to his dad, and his girlfriend is also a member of our group of friends, but she’s reporting that their general conversations are getting shorter and less exciting…

What did his dad say?

Can you call him?
If he is at college there may be counselors available for him to speak to free of charge or for a small fee if he’s willing to do that

Wow, hes lucky to have a friend like you. Try some indirect communication, like sending him a letter, talk about yourself, your life and reminiss about the younger years you guys might have had together, I would suggest some happy times. Tell him you miss hanging out and that sometime around the holidays suggest some plans to get together.

If your friend does not cope well with loss I suggest you do some reading on assisting loved ones with emotional loss, theres plenty of material out there on the internet and probably something at your local library.
