movies help silence of the lambs?

in silence of the lambs, what was the metal pice hannibal used to escape after he was transferred to the new cell? he spat it out of his mouth, small and thing, shorter than a toothpick but a bit thicker. it’s driving me insane that i cant figure out what it is.
