life help: What’s the point? - Help.com

What’s the point?

I walked home from work last night and i was thinking about my purpose in life. Some people work, say, as a post man all their lives and don’t seem to achive anything wothwhile (no offence to post men, i used to be one). I feel that i should achieve something that improves our lives or at least helps to improve things for my children. i find it very difficult to imagine a life where i just went to work everyday and didn’t really achive anything worthwhile. The sad thing is i haven’t made a difference and i’m starting to think maybe i never will. I don’t know how to cope with that.

I often wonder what the point is. The truth is we won’t know untill we die and then there still may not be a point. Anyway as for making a difference there small ways to do that. In October I am going on a trek to India to raise money and awareness for Help the aged. It is only a 10 day trek which means I can help and not completly change my lifestyle. Maybe there is something you could do to help the environment if we all do something small it could really start to help.

Guess what i went threw the same thing. Then i did some missionary work around the neighborhood. Like mowing elderly folks yards for free. And helping out people who need it like homeless people. Help out at the shelters. Or find some good christian literature and introduce people to Jesus that don’t know him very well. When you serve others and specially God you never feel worthless.

Thanks for all your comments and i’m with you Asvynpate and i wish you luck. I appreciate the jesus comments aswell, but isn;t there more to life than just talking about jesus. shouldn’t we be trying to tackle some of the prblems that face us today and really earn a place in heaven. If Jesus loves us then shouldm’t we make him proud of what we’ve achieved.

We were put on this earth for one thing and one thing only. To glorify Gods name. To tell others about him and what he has done for us. Everything we do should be for him. Whats the point of doing something for ourselves. We don’t live that long. And after 120 years nobody will even remember you or what you did in life. Only God will know and he sees all our selfish acts and all our non selfish acts. Sure you work hard all your life to get a nice house have some kids, grandkids. Then you die. And someone else is living in your house and someone else is doing your job. But if you bring people to Jesus thats something that will never go away. You will meet people in heaven that will say, dude i am here because of you. If it wasn’t for you i would be dead forever. I am so glad you took the time out of your busy life to help me.

Everyone makes a difference everyday in the choices they make. You do not have to do charity work or anything extravagant to prove this to yourself or anyone else. You make a difference to your kids everyday just by being there. Just becuase it’s not up in stars and lights that you made a difference doesn’t mean it is not happening around you. Everything in this universe is linked to each other, every action causes a rection somewhere, like an echo.

It is NOT about the destination, it’s about the journey.

The feeling that we need to making a difference, attempting to please others, please God, achieve something with your life, is rooted in a feeling that we are not worth something in and of ourselves - that we need the approval of others in order to be happy, need to accomplish something or do something worthwhile in order to convince ourselves and others that we are not as meaningless and worthless as we feel.

Much of our life feels meaningless and worthless because we are not being true to our real desires and feelings - because we don’t believe that they are possible, or because we believe they are wrong. If you feel like your life is worthless and meaningless, just doing things to make yourself feel like your life is worth something, or convincing yourself that you really are worth something or are making a difference even though you don’t feel it, will not accomplish a lot. You will eventually feel dissatisfied because you will need to do even more to avoid those feelings of worthlessness within you. You will have to put a lot of mental effort into trying to convince yourself of something you don’t feel, and try to avoid situations and thoughts that make you feel as your really do.

There is a reason that you feel worthless and purposeless, and if you allow yourself to feel those feelings and not try to avoid them, you will shortly begin to see where those feelings came from and the feelings will come out at the root. Then you will seek out a job that fulfills you because you know yourself and what you want, because you feel that you deserve to be happy and you will create it for youself, rather than just seeking to find external fulfilment to an internal problem.

There is alot of great advice here and all of it should be appreciated.
But to me, Siamuse’s view seems to work best. Sure were not all rock stars and donating huge amounts of cash to charities and adopting children, but around us there is people that depend on us for even little things. Life is a journey and i believe we are all here for a reason. The trick is figuring out what….thats the hard part. Sure we want the answers now…but if we knew it straight away we wouldnt appreciate it as much when it came.

We need the bad times there so, when the good times come along and everything is peachy, we have something to compare to, something to motivae us to keep tryin and keep looking for what ever it is your looking for.

Peace. Mitch.

I want you to go and look in the mirror as soon as you read this and I want you to say the following out loud “I am unique, I am worthy And I CAN”.

You can you sound like such a smart person honestly. YOU must know none of what you said is true. You have made a difference! So you’re not a rock star or a rocket scientist big deal. You’ve touched peoples lives, I m sure you’ve given up things for your children’s sake! That’s selflessness. You’ve got the potential to be anything you want to be. Go out and do it what’s stopping you?? If you want to play a guitar it’s not to late play a guitar. If you want to be a computer programmer go out and get a degree.

There is a point you wouldn’t be here if there was no point weather it was ‘God’ or science or whatever you believe. Life is too magical to just be a long road of tiny coincidences.

Life has no limitations, except the ones you make. You can’t ever give up because then your life would be a failure. Life is our own personal journey perceived
differently through different eyes. All the things we do may not be great but they are significant. Weather you’re a Famous politician or a carpenter we all deserve respect and reverence. I revere you so don’t give up there’s still so much you have to teach and be taught.

Just remember

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm”.

Peace and Love Eloka

If you really want to get into the answers to your purpose in life then I suggest reading “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren. You read a chapter a day for 40 days. The chapters are short and to the point and give you something to think about at the end. I am only on chapter 5 but I really like this book. I suffer from depression and anxiety and I feel like a lost and hopeless case. I am hoping this book helps me see that I have a purpose here and gives me a reason to be happy when I wake up in the morning. Give it a try. I am.

I pondered the point to existence long and hard once upon a time. And I came to the same conclusions mentioned here. It came in stages the further and further I broke it down. Then it dawned on me that I was over-thinking. That’s what humans do. But don’t get caught up in too much thinking and forget to pursue your primary purpose.

Your primary purpose is to “successfully” propagate the species. I highlight the word “successfully” because there’s a lot more to it than just making a baby. Too many of us spend too little time working on doing this well.
