For those of you regulars who like to give assistance via the Internet, here’s an interesting article the Help.com staff has been reading.

http://www.newscientisttech.com/artic...

The idea is an interesting one and it makes a lot of sense to me. When phone lines get jammed in some future disaster, maybe people will turn to social network sites they already use like MySpace (or someday Help.com) to trade news and critical recovery information.

Do you think you’d use your MySpace account like this?

Problems with Myspace.com, Friendster or Bebo.com?

Generally speaking, if you are having issues with those sites it is best to contact their support staff directly. These links can get you started:

Myspace Support, Friendster Support and Bebo Support

If you are trying to access these services from your school and are blocked, we suggest you abide by the schools rules while you utilize the schools equipment.

myspace is way too oversaturated with self promotion and spam, it can only get worse. so to answer you question, i think sites like this would serve as a better catalyst for that type of info circulating about in a useful manner. just make sure rupert doesn’t get his hands on help.com as well.

I think it will work for families but not so much for the general public information…

I don’t really get this. Wouldn’t any disaster severe enough to take out the telephone system also wipe the cable and fiber optics networks as well the electrical utility grid? Why would the internet be functioning when the telephones are not? Cell phones have too little battery life to be usefull after the power goes out.

It should be remembered that after Katrina the only functioning communication out of the NO’s disaster area was an old-fashioned payphone.

I’d have to agree with TheBlastedKing about Myspace. It’s way too saturated with self-promotion and spam to be used as a reliable source of information in the midsts of a disaster. Also, so many “fake” news bulletins go out on Myspace that it would probably just be ignored. It would have to depend on the website in order for the material to be trusted. CNN.com or FOXNEWS.com would probably be more trusted than Myspace.com.

A large enough EMP blast, like that after a nuclear explosion, would take out anything electrical, probably including cellphones so the only thing that would work would be messenger pigeons. :) haha

I can’t even set up my myspace accout it confuses me. I can just about work out Help.com thought. So maybe I wouldn’t be in to much trouble in the event of a disaster. Nice idea though

I try to help whenever I have extra time or money the problem is theres not much to go around I also am very helpful whereever I go it doesnt stop at passing the buck it stops at volenteering your time to an agency or someone who needs guidance or just helping a handicapped lady through a door or carrying packages onto a bus for her its many little things these are things I can do and always will do we me and my kids do all that we can in our communities and to have people run us down because we are having a bit of hard luck is just ungodlike.and unneighborly its not a freebee hand out we need we need to advance and succeed and thats that college degree where I can really make a difference some day. I feel sorry for all of you…its sad.
