What if I never fall in love?

I am 24 years old and I have never been in love. I have dated a number of guys, but always end things before they get too serious. I never let anyone get too close.

I’m dating someone now, and things have been getting serious. My first reaction was to freak out and try to break up with him. We decided to just take things slow and hang out for a while, but I’m scared that there is something more seriously wrong with me, that’s keeping me from ever getting close to someone. I like to think that I’ll know when I’m with the right person, and I’ll allow myself to fall in love then, but am I being unrealistic?

You should wait until it feels right and you’ll know when it does, but you also need to try and relax and let your guard down a little more. You need to trust and take chances, that way you know what is right and wrong.

I’m like you, I find it hard to get close to anyone. I’ve been hurt a lot and find it hard to trust also i’ve watched my parents relationship go down hill then back up.
I think its fear, you fear getting hurt or being trapped with someone.

You should wait until it feel right.

I’m planning to ask my doctor if i could get tested for schizotypal.

How many guys have you dated and dumped? 4 or 104? You never felt like you wanted to get close to anybody? You could have a problem there. You are not that young. If you were 14 I would say it was normal.

I would love to get close to somebody, but have never felt that it was right. I dated someone in high school for a while, but it was long distance. The first guy I was crazy about in college was someone I wasn’t allowed to date (I was his RA), and then I dated several guys after that since I couldn’t be with him.

I dated a guy right after graduating from college, but I was leaving the country six months later, and didn’t want to get too serious. I dated a few guys while I was abroad, but didn’t want to get too serious since I knew I was leaving. And then I dated someone when I got back to the states, whom I’d been friends with for a long time, but had to leave again to start grad school in another state and so ended it with him.

It seems like this mix of bad timing and bad judgment, but you’re right, I’m not that young, and maybe there’s more going on here than that…

No if you are moving every couple of years it makes things different. I mean you will be getting a job after grad school and moving again so really you can’t get too serious now if you are still in school. I guess you can, but then one of you is going to have to follow the other one around.

So I know I posted this a while ago, but I just wanted to say that I finally met someone wonderful! We are in love and have been committed to each other for the past eight months, and I am so happy. I guess it just takes time…

Thats great news! I was asking the same to myself and apparently one can fall in love even when it looks impossible after all.
