Help, I think I have Scurvy!

!!

Hi! I think I have scurvy maybe. I went to the Doc for bruises on my legs, but they didn’t run any tests. they just said that it may be scurvy and to increase my vitamin C. I’ve been eating oranges and brocolli and such since(like a month), but i still have bruises, and newly this morning i have something that seems to be called “petechiae.”(little red spots.. they’re about the size od a beebee) None of my bruises hurt and I can’t remember where I got them. But if it’s scurvy, why isn’t it going away with an intake of Vitamin C? Do i need something with Vitamin C in order to metabolise it? I realy should stop surfing the web. I’m going to become a hyperchondriac.
p.s. - I should also note i had a bloody nose for no reason last week and have been super moody… mind the moodiness i was chalking up to my girly hormones. lol.
Anyway, any thoughts? I don’t wanna be pushy to a doctor over nothing…

Take a high dosage vitamin c tablet daily, I take 1000mg a day at the moment as I recently had a severe burn and it aids healing. Make sure you take it daily as your body does not keep hold of vitamin c, you pee it out! Also try eating kiwi fruits, they have a higher level of vitamin c than oranges.

Do be pushy to your doctor. They should’ve tested you for other possible diseases.
If the vitamin C is not helping then it’s obviously something else. A bruise is blood under your skin from a broken blood vessel, combine that to a nosebleed and you already got a serious symptom - hemorrhaging. If it’s in your leg or your nose that may not be much of a problem, get it in your brain and it’s called a stroke, can be deadly.
Lots of diseases have hemorrhaging as a symptom, your doc should test, scan and biopsy.
If he wouldn’t either get another doc or complain about the current one to his direct supervisor.

I can give that a try, but how long should it take to have effect?

Wow. very different answer from the last. I do feel bad when I’m pushy to doctors because they’re alot smarter than me. But I’m going to have to do something if they get worse. It’s weird cause they turned yellow for a little bit so i thought they were healing… and then they went blue again… anyway, scurvy can cause nosebleeds as well apparently.. sooo. ya.

Extreme low levels of vitamin C can cause weakness of blood vessel walls, thus causing hemorrhaging. BUT if it’s something else then nothing would get better.
If it’s leukemia - better get diagnosed early.
If it’s hemorrhagic fever - you’re dead with a 60% chance.

Well like I said you need to take it daily to keep your intake up, my burn (hand went through an oxy/propane flame used for melting glass) has healed much quicker than I expected and it was on advice of my sister (shes a doctor). However if you see no improvement in a couple of weeks a trip back to the doctor is a must.

Your optimism is inspiring. just as i’m trying to avoid being a hypercondriac.. LoL mind the last time i went to the doc thinking i was a hypercondriac i had pnemonia.. and they were all very nice.. but some doctors aren’t and that’s what bugs me i guess. My mum went once and the nurse pretty much said her symptoms made no sense and she was therefore lying. But I really do appreciate your replies. alot. thanks!

I think i will pick up some capsuls and see how it goes for a couple weeks. If i have lukemia or the hemor-whats-it fever, seems like i’m likely to die anyway. ;) I’ll try remember to post back on how it goes.

eli is being a bit drastic, but you do need to be aware that small symptoms can lead to or indicate big problems. take vitamin C tablets, and in the mean time insist that your doctor look into other alternatives to what it might be. if you’ve been trying to put more vitamins into your system for a month and nothing has changed, he should be concerned.

Note: Scurvy is nowadays very, very rare!
It sound more like a kind of dermatitis or an allergic reaction.
But of course they should check it more seriously!

So apparently scurvey is really rare. lol. I had a lovely incident at work last night. Let’s not get into it. It involves other problems that would take pages.
Sufficive to say I ended up at the merge. I brought up the bruises while i was there anyway and they said scurvy is a ridiculous diagnosis. More likely that i just bruise easy and the bloody nose was a coincidence. However, they ran bloodwork to be sure and everything came back normal. Thanks again everyone!
