My financial advisor told me the best way to save for the future/retierment is to first pay off debt, then save 3 months living expenses, then open an IRA or Roth IRA if you are under 40

I would suggest a ROTH IRA (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roth_IRA) - Stocks are okay if you know what you are doing, but at the same time can be a gamble. As 2bhelpful said, 401k is good.
