Remember help: I’ve noticed I’m blacking out for short periods. - Help.com

I’ve noticed I’m blacking out for short periods.

Like, 30 seconds to a few minutes. Mostly I find myself going to do things that are already done, or repeating things that I don’t remember doing the first time. Like, last night I was fixing myself a piece of cake, and I got a plate out of the cabinet, but when I went to go set it down, there was a plate already there. And i have this really vague memory of walking away between getting the cake out of the fridge and getting the plate, but I couldn’t say for how long or what I did. It’s just starting to scare me as it’s not the first time in my life this has happened. The odd thing is, and this may just be coincidentally, but I started taking krill oil about a week ago, and I started noticing the blackouts a couple days ago. Krill oil is kind of like fish oil, but the body absorbs it better and it’s helps with mental functions. So I’m scared my brain is indeed starting to work better, and that better is just not in my favor. That’s just the paranoia talking though, i hope.

You may want to see a specialist about it, blacking out isn’t good. What if your doing something important like driving when this happens.

about 6-8 hours, been resting pretty well actually.

Well, that’s the thing. I’m clearly remaining competent. Like, dishing are getting done, and things organized, e-mails sent, conversations had. I just don’t remember them.

I still can’t see this being healthy for you in the long run. Whats to say that later it won’t be for minutes, tens of minutes, an hour? I know fish oil is good, but do you take vitamins daily too? Maybe consider taking some iron tablets too.

I eat very well. plenty of meat and vegetables, well hydrate. All of my blood work always turns out well. Except for those 3 months in high school when i went anorexic, I’ve never had any deficiencies. And i know I’m good now because i recently had the crap tested out of me so I can donate my kidney. And, you’re right, I don’t know. The only thing i do know that is that it’s not the first time, and the previous times, at least to my knowledge, it was never anything serious. It’s only been a couple days now. I guess i’m kinda hoping it passes. i’m also really hoping I don’t have some sort of suppressed Dissociative Identity Disorder, but that’s pretty far fetched.

Lol, I’m all sorts of worried about me too :P I’m not quite ready to run off to the doctor. I don’t really even know what they’d tell me. I’ve been in for odd things before, and they do blood works and thyroid tests and when everything comes back normal they just tell me “well, it’s some kind of fluke. I’m sure it will pass.” And for the most part things do. Sometimes things flare up, like this weird inflammation of my sternum I get for apparently no reason, but *shrug* yeah.

I guess I just kinda wanted to tell people who want freak out. My friends, bless them, can barely handle my anxiety disorder (and, yeah, I’ve considered it, but I’ve been pretty mellow lately actually), the last thing they need to know is I’m having small blackouts

I read a little bit about krill oil, like at WbMD, and don’t see any reason it would cause something like that.

it’s not the oil, I think it’s purely coincidental. I was just being paranoid.

Nope on the tv, and I do regular exercise. I do crunches ever morning and go for a run or hit the elliptical or something at least every other day. like I said, I’m perfectly healthy. weird **** just happens to me.

You could be having little minor epileptic incidents. You really should talk to your doctor about this if it continues more a very few more days … or then if it returns.

Lack of any basic physiological necessities could cause similar symptoms, like lack of food, air, sleep, or sanity.

Thanks for taking that in. :) An aunt of mine had that for a while. She was cooking once and burned her hand without knowing. She was “absent” just for a minute at a time.

Never in the world in all the medical literature has there been a confirmed case of DID. I’m inclined to think it’s probably made-up, either by Freudian psychologists or the patients themselves (who had other issues going on, perhaps). So don’t worry about that at ALL.

Do, however, worry about what this means about your mental faculties, and please see your doctor right away if you can afford it.

Kind of like “road hypnosis,” when you’ve been driving a while and don’t remember going down a stretch of road . . . it can be scary when you really think about it! Was I abducted by aliens? Or was it just the “Adjustment Bureau” fixing some things!

But get checked out by a doc if it seems to be really acute!

Actually, that happens when your subconscious takes over. Like, say every day you drop your keys in the same spot. After awhile, the motion wont even reach your conscious mind, so you wont remember dropping your keys in that spot, but there they will be. Sadly, it’s not that.

Memory formation may be pretty natural but it’s an active process, the brain has to do something to translate experience into memory. Maybe it doesn’t feel like doing that all the time

That sounds plausible, but the question remains as to why. It hasn’t gone away, but it hasn’t gotten worse either. I’ll lose a few minutes a couple times a day. And the soonest doctor’s appointment I could get is the 25th :/

How extreme is it,

-closer to the extreme of forgetting who and where you are like from a seizure or passing out from low blood sugar

-closer to the absent-mindedness that most of the rest of us deal with all day long, dipping in and out of various states of remembering, consciousness, dreaming and awareness?

It’s exactly like I described earlier, whatever happens, I remain functioning and aware. I usually only notice it when I find myself going to do something I felt like I just thought of doing, and it’s already done. Or sometimes e-mails will be sent I don’t remember sending. Sometimes I find myself hanging up the phone but having no idea I was even having a conversation. Nothing really severe or long, but worrisome none the less.

You just sound like a deep thinker to me . . . like the professor who was walking down the street when he stopped to talk to a student.

After they had exchanged a few words, the professor asked, “When you saw me, from which direction was I coming?”

The student replied, while pointing behind the professor, “You came from that way.”

“Good!” said the professor. “Then I’ve already had lunch!”

That is worrisome. Why don’t you call your doctor’s office and have them ask the doctor if this is an emergency?

I do recommend you go to a doctor.

You are having problems with short-term memory. We ALL have SOME problems with short-term memory, but some problems cannot be ignored.

There is a region in the brain that controls short-term memory. If it is damaged, we simply cannot remember.

A man with such a damaged region had a therapist work with him for 15 years. Every day she came into his room, she had to re-introduce herself, because he could not remember her from one day to the next.

I doubt that you have such damage . . . but you should be checked out by a neurologist to remove any doubt!

May e you have the “moving stupids’ … Not callng u stupid, but I tend to get ‘absent minded’ and do some of the stuff you describe right around the time I’m going through some major change or reorganization my life.
