The backlash begins .

. . against Netflix!

I can’t remember the title of the original post when people started talking about Netflix. I predicted a huge backlash against Netflix’s price hikes. Looks like I was right:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Netflix-price-hike-angers-apf-445008527.html? x=0

This isn’t the most compelling social issue in the world, but a LOT of companies have been hiking fees lately . . . so how do all of you feel about price hikes for which there is no apparent economic motivation other than corporate greed?

Any 60% price-hike is going to create backlash…no matter what industry. Unfortunately, most of the video rental stores closed down due to Netflix, so even with a price-hike, they still remain rather competitively priced if you watch more than 4 DVD films a month and unlimited streaming is hard to beat.

I’ll probably drop the DVD service, but I’m not sure yet.

Do you netflix?

It’s the companies choice. It sucks in my opinion but netflix knows they can still get plenty of people to pay. Once they put more stuff on their streaming service it will still be a better deal than redbox or any other movie renting place.

I don’t use Netflix, simply because they don’t have that many movies. The Public Library has a better selection, and it’s free. Netflix is one of those things like McDonalds and Wal-Mart. It caters to the Instant Gratification crowd. People want something, and they want it now. So they pay for it. And people deserve whatever they get when they partake in those kinds of business relationships.

What movie doesn’t netflix have? lol. I’ve only found a select few between DVDs and online streaming.

I used to use Redbox, but I love obscure indie films and foreign films, so it’s hard to find that kind of stuff there. Though more recently they’ve expanded the selection a bit.

Netflix did, indeed, drive one of the final nails into Blockbuster’s coffin . . . and with that competitor out of the way, they felt free to raise their prices.

Reminds me of Schumpeter’s “creative destruction.” The automobile industry was created, and then destroyed the buggy-whip industry.

Do all of you think that Netflix will deal themselves a serious blow with their price hike?

Well, all the ones that aren’t out on DVD, just to name a few hundred. There are a lot of movies that are only available on VHS that are very good. Especially movies from when I was a kid, and when my parents were kids.

I’m planning to keep my Netflix streaming subscription, but cancel the DVD portion of the subscription. We use the streaming a lot, and only take out 2-4 DVDs per month. It is their choice to raise their price by more than 50%, and it will be my choice to reduce the amount of service that I buy from them. If there were a better streaming service at a comparable price, I’d go for that. Hulu is close, but it doesn’t have the TV shows that my kids like to watch. Amazon prime is nowhere near acceptable for families - most of their movies are R rated. Youtube ain’t got it, and no other service that I know of is even worth a mention.

I don’t think it will kill them, but it definitely seems to be losing them business.

My public library doesn’t have an awesome selection, but it is adequate. However, it has huge fees for late returns. With children who like to watch a movie over and over, it isn’t what we need. For me, using Netflix makes good economic sense. Instant gratification is just a bonus feature.

Ah. I see. I don’t even own a VCR anymore. Sadly though, my public library actually charges a fee:(

I think businesses have a right to charge whatever they want for anything but food. :-)
