Should I run for editor-in-chief for my academic journal, or not?

+ more chance to get into my much desired Master Program (Creative Writing, Editing and Publishing in Melbourne)

- takes up a lot of time and I’m already stressed
- the other people on the board are intimidating, seem to know a lot more than I do.. And they seem to be a lot more ambitious than I. Although they’re only on the board for fun, whereas I’m there to try whether I want to be a professional editor.

I don’t know. I feel I’m holding myself back because I feel terribly shy, and because I’m scared I’ll get a burn out or something. What should I do..?

Are you up to making tough calls on which articles are to be published, and which are not?

And up to rejecting manuscripts or sending them back for rewrites?

Do you melt if someone “comes back at you”?

Ask yourself these questions . . . and then decide!

maybe you can go for a lesser position? something that’s not as stressful, but still looks great on the resume?

I’m already in the second highest position on the board (which didn’t make a difference to being a general board member really, because our previous chair thought she could do everything on her own). Plus, everything is voted about (which articles are published etc.) which means each meeting takes ages, but it also means that - although it’s the chair’s responsibility - I wouldn’t have to decide everything on my own (and there are still some who believe the board is not democratic enough..).

The things you have to do as chief is set dates for the meetings, chair them, find a publisher/printer, administrative issues (shared with the secretary), make sure everybody does their job correctly, mediate between editors and writers and professors if something’s wrong, finding referees, answer all e-mails..

I guess what I’d prefer is a sort of substitute-chair. I could act as chair when the real one is ill or something and be sub-editor the rest of the time. Maybe I can get the new chair to give the sub-editors a little more responsibility..

Still 4 weeks to decide :)

Thanks!

I think you should go for it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It’s time to come out of the burrow, and spread your wings . . . and fly!
