Solve this mystery.

My bicycle chain skipped all summer long.. The weather in the mountains got quite cool today. The chain miraculously stopped skipping. Is it a coincidence with the weather, or some other factor that made the chain stop skipping? Wen I lubricated the chain in the beginning of summer ,I didnt lube the whole chain. Could this be part of the initial problem. Anyway, I saved myself 100 dollars , not replacing the chain and the freewheel, and it seems like, time healed the problem..Can anybody figure this out.
