In the UK we all pay something called national insurance, it is a small percentage of what you earn and it is removed from your pay at source. As far as I know Obama wants to introduce a similar scheme in the US. The benefits mean not one single person in the UK is denied health care, in some cases it is not the best but you can always opt to pay more and get private care and achieve the same standard as the US.
It means the better off in society look after the less well off. The disadvantages are that the best care cannot always be made available as it is not always affordable but it would mean if you arrived in the UK for example and had a heart attack you would not be left to die because you had no healthcare. While I understand the money cost of a welfare state most people given the choice would not want to suffer and die.
The system is free to all, personally I think it is a poor reflection on a society that puts making money before someone’s health. While I understand there is a cost to everything and we all need to be funded actually getting rich and powerful off the back of other peoples suffering (eg cancer patients) is deplorable and I could not sleep at night if it was me.
This funds another debate that the drug companies that are actually calling the shots on all this never really want a cure just to sustain life and again I think this to be ridiculous but then with a private only system you leave yourself open to that kind of criticism.
