Some Things Cannot Be Contained

I saw you in the field.
You were on your knees,
clawing at the ground,
digging it up
with your bare hands.
I could smell the dirt
and it smelled like home.
I watched you from a distance,
staring intently,
as you pulled a wooded box
from the earth.
You pried it open,
turned it upside down,
and its contents fell at your feet.
Two little people made of rags,
a twin of you and a twin of me.
You wept over the figures,
tears dripping from your fingertips,
and you screamed aloud
“I shouldn’t have to be alone!”
But we were always alone.
You placed your twin inside the box
and returned him to the earth.
Then you walked away with mine
and took me home.
