It depends on allsorts Bruce, mostly how much money you are willing to spend. But also, what you need it for, will you be using it a lot, would you like to “p1mp it up” etc.. it’s a big decision. I was going to buy a used car from a newspaper, but it’s a tricky and risky business out there. So I bought one from a proper dealer (used, but only 2003!) and it’s a dream :D

Yay - have fun! I know that whenever I’ve look for a car I always check out the “Lemon-Aid” line of books -
(they have a website, too- lemonaidcars.com).

These books are usually available at the library even. They rate and give lots of details (mpg, etc) on different cars/models and they’re updated yearly.

I’m sure there are other manuals like this out there- but really, they’re most useful.

unless u absolutely/ desperately need it… do NOT do it - it is a liability - save the cash, bide ur time… when the time is right you will be ready and it will be only sweet.

Go with a small to mid-size import car, like nissan altima (my current transportation device), sentra, or maxima. Honda Civic, Accord, CRX. Toyota Corolla or camry. Mazda protege, mx-3, mx-6. They are affordable, easy to work on, cheap to work on, and good on gas. Do not buy anything like a lincoln, cadillac, or a mercedes. They are nice cars, but usually traded to a dealership by the original owner towards a new one after 5 to 7 years, then sold for 4 times as much as the trade in value, and if something goes wrong, parts can be expensive, but even worse they are very expensive to work on. I had a 1994 cadillac eldorado which I bought from a friends dad, everything was in excellent condition on it, but the rear main seal leaked oil really bad. The seal it self I could get for no more than 50 bucks, but to have it replaced the engine would have had to been removed, so I was looking at about $2000 in labor which is more than half of what I paid for the car. So I sold it.
I wouldn’t worry all that much about safety because these days cars don’t blow up if you get into a fender bender. As long as you keep all the wheels secured tightly, do regular maintenance, and look drive defensively, you should be good.
