StarTrek Newb!

I would like to see what all the hub-bub is about. Wondering what the best way to get into it all is… I know it was a TV show, and that there were also movies of it - What should I start with? Is there a preferred order which would help me understand the story better? THanks.

If I were going to introduce my friends to Star Trek, I’d probably start off with the movies Star Trek 2-4,6 for the original series (Kirk). These movies give a pretty good taste of what your in for in terms of the original series without a large time commitment - and if you like what you see then you could wade into the tv show.

For The Next Generation (Picard) only the movie (First Contact/Star Trek 8) is really worthwhile for the movies - Generations (Star Trek 7) isn’t bad but it’s my understanding that only devoted fans appreciate that movie. The show it’s self is pretty episodic so it’s you can really jump into it however you like. Personally I think the episode “The Best of Both Worlds” isn’t a bad place to start. But starting from the beginning isn’t bad either. The two series that are most discussed are the original series and TNG.

Deep Space Nine (Sisko) is very serial and it’s also a spinoff of TNG. This show probably isn’t a good place to start but if you like TNG it’s pretty good. I’m not too sure about Voyager (Janeway).

Sorry for the long winded response.

I would suggest you start with the original series. Then, skip the first two seasons of TNG, because they’re by far the worst ones. Start watching TNG from Season 3 on.

Then you can watch Voyager in almost any order you like and DS9 in order. It doesn’t matter which one you watch first.

Watch Enterprise last. First watch some of the first episodes. If you like them, watch the entire series in order. If you don’t like them, watch the last episode of Season 2 and the last two seasons in order, because that’s when the show became serialized and much better.

There are some important episodes in the episodic parts of each series. You can ask for a list of them, but you won’t miss much if you don’t.

The movies aren’t very important. I suggest you watch all of them after the shows, unless someone else comes up with a more specific order.

And if you like what you’re watching, I would suggest you take a look into other sci-fi TV shows as well.

deep space 9 was terrible, don’t watch it. it’s a space soap opera. they barely travelled anywhere, they just stayed in their freakin outpost. it’s called Star TREK, not Star Sit-Around-And-Wait…

Don’t forget the animated series if you want to be thorough.

I think it would be a good idea to skip bad standalone episodes.

Can you give me an axample?

The episode Q Who is the first appearance of the Borg, and definitely needs to be watched. Code of Honor, on the other hand, is bad and its events are never mentioned again. You’ll understand the rest of the franchise perfectly if you don’t watch it. I would recommend skipping it, and most other episodes of the first two seasons of TNG.

When is it mentioned? I don’t remember anyone mentioning it again. Also, I don’t think a mere mention of an episode is enough to make it important. The events Of The Naked Now are mentioned in The Measure of A Man, but you’ll understand the episode perfectly without watching it first. When deciding whether to watch a particular episode, you need to take two things into account: its quality and its significance to continuity. The Naked Now is bad, and is briefly mentioned once. That one mention hardly makes it worth watching.
