Right Now help: I just don’t feel the drive I used to do for school. - Help.com

I just don’t feel the drive I used to do for school.

I’m a 3rd year electrical engineering student at a top institution. For the past 3 weeks I’ve only gone to one class with regularity, only because it takes attendance. That’s really bad considering I’m here on loans, I lost scholarship after a bad semester.

I just feel like I’m drifting along right now. When I don’t go to class I don’t even play games or watch TV or anything, sometimes I just sit and read the news for hours. I know that I have to work hard to get what I want in life, but I just am not feeling it right now.

I’m up to date with my homework and even when I don’t go to class I’m still pretty close to where the course syllabus is. Of course I’m achieving that by doing everything last minute, which is bad for the stress it builds. I don’t find the stuff we’re doing particularly challenging, and I don’t really care about a lot of it anyway.

All I really want to do is make stuff that blows other stuff up. I don’t really care about programming or computer memory stuff, and I only have one electrical engineering specific class right now. I want to build defense and weapons systems and have enough money so I can take care of my parents who have done a lot for me.

Maybe it’s just not what you want anymore?

This is what I want to do, but for some reason I just haven’t felt that fire in the past few weeks. I’m gonna keep chugging along and keep my eyes on the prize but I guess I just need some perspective or to vent or something.

Is there anything that motivates you to work?

You could make a timetable to give your days more structure. That way, you may avoid leaving things to the last minute and making yourself more stressed.

Perhaps one reason why you’re losing interest is because the work doesn’t challenge you. I find that challenging subjects interest me a lot more than ones I understand quickly. If this is the case for you, why not do some extra research outside of class? Advance your knowledge and push your understanding. Stimulate your mind.

If you’re really not enjoying classes and are skipping them because you’re not interested, you could always talk to your professor or lecturer and get their advice on how to remain motivated.

The only class that’s interesting right now is my circuits class, even then it’s not that great (at this point it’s just doing differential equation word problems, not hard).

Hopefully I do get an internship so I can actually start earning some money and get real experience.

some are unpaid. some are paid. Is there a PEPCO/similar company near you? A friend of mine worked there during part of her junior year, as well as senior year, and she is working there after graduation. she started looking early which was the key. this i am positive kept her motivated.

OK, this is your wake-up call . . .

You are not in university to be entertained. It doesn’t matter if a course is boring or not–you still need to know the course material. Again, you are there to LEARN and not to be entertained.

Your fellow citizens are humping 90lb packs in Afghanistan, and are dodging bullets . . . and YOUR only responsibility right now is to study and prepare yourself to be an engineer.

You want to design new weapons systems? Great. Electrical engineering is a great place to start. Pretty soon even a bullet from an infantryman’s weapon is going to have a guidance system. YOU can design it!

Lastly, it doesn’t matter how you FEEL. Every day, people get up and go to work regardless of how they FEEL. You need to resume going to class and hitting the books no matter HOW you FEEL!

So, get focused right now and get your a$$ in gear. You’re wasting your time, your money and your parents’ money by doing this program in a half-a$$ed way. Right now, get up and hit those books and don’t miss another class.

We don’t need half-a$$ed weapons designed by half-a$$ed engineers! Got it? Good! Now get moving!
