We’re moving in a couple weeks, and we have two cats, ages 11 and 4.

Both cats were street cats we took in, and both are terrified of any place that isn’t home. We even tried taking them on vacation one year, and all they did was huddle miserably in their carriers the whole week.

So, now we’re moving and of course they are going. The first leg of this journey will involve about a 12 hour car ride. This is how we have prepped so far:

1: Trip to the vet who pronounced them both in excellent health.

2: Mild sedative prescribed for the trip. Sedative has been already tried to make sure the cats have no adverse reactions. No adverse reactions.

3: Feline pheramone spray for the carriers. Also, plug in versions for when we’re at the new house.

4: Puppy pads to put on the bottom of the carrier, under a nice, soft, towel, in case of any “accidents”

5: Assorted towels and blankets washed, but now around the house for the cats and ourselves to scent so we can put them around the new house to make it smell like home.

6: Several empty bottles which will be filled with water before we leave, so we can wean them over to the new water slowly

7: Room planned in the new house where we can put them to keep them away from all the excitement (moving people, contractors finishing up, etc. This will be a guest room, eventually, so they can stay in there as long as they need, until they’re ready to accept the new place.

I think we’ve got everything covered, but I want to see what others think. We’ve been packing and moving stuff in and out of the place the last week or so, and the cats clearly know something is up and are on their guard. Any suggestions on any other ways we could make both the move and adjusting to the new place easier for them?

Yes, it might seem like I’m being way too worried about cats, but as I said, they are both rescued cats, and they both can’t stand being anywhere but the first and only forever home they’ve ever known. I would like this experience to be as good for them as I can get it.

One last thing? They are both indoor only cats. Our new house will have a porch which was built mainly for them.

Thanks, Nab. I hope they’ll be okay too. They’re such worriers, I swear they learned it from me! :-D

You know the fragrance cats love most and excite them very much (in the sense of feeling at home) is Valerian.
You can buy Valerian drops at drugstores and pharmacies.
Two or three drops are enough to get them used to a new cat litter box or a new place of them.

Okay, I’ll have to check that out, Zirbel. Thank you.
