Why do my eyes change colour?

I am the first in my family to have brown eyes. Everyone else has either blue or green. My Dad had brown eyes, but I never knew him, so everyone in my Mums side of the family only has green or blue eyes. Sometimes, my eyes are dark brown. Other times, light brown, sometimes light brown with a ring of green around the pupil, and other times just green. They seem to mainly go green in sunlight. I’ve been looking it up, and it’s not anything to do with make up or clothes, as I don’t wear make up, and I basically wear the same clothes every day (school uniform) and my eyes just randomly change colour throughout the day depending on the amount of light. Why is this?

Its exactly what you said: light. However, they can also change according to your mood. Mine change. They are hazel but when I am happy they get green and when I’m really happy they are actually gray. But when I am sad or upset they get brown. Back when I was going through a lot of stuff my eyes were always brown and never gray.

Colour habituation?
Also, the darker our environment gets, the less colour we see.

My eyes are like that too. Most of the change is due to light, but as the previous poster mentioned, your mood also affects color. Once they turned a reddish brown - that was interesting. Usually they are light brown, gray, or green, or some combination of the three. When I was a kid, I called my eye color “camouflage”.

It’s normal for your eye color to change as you grow older, but also keep in mind the lighting wherever you rae also has an effect.
