Thought help: Help wanting to hook up an old turntable. - Help.com

Help wanting to hook up an old turntable.

Hey guys I’ve Got some vinyls, but I need a way to hook up this vintage turntable I’ve got. The turntable does not have a pre amp built in. I’ve thought of this set up:

I’d hook up the turntable to a VCR and then hook the VCR to a cd player stereo system.

My question is, would this set up work or would I need an alternative?

Thanks!!

James

Don’t you have an amp? In my day the back of the amp had two rca connectors for the right and left channels and a spot to plug a bare wire in for the ground. Just plug it in where it says tape or other audio,

No James, that will not work. VCR is not a preamp. If your stereo system does not have input for a phonograph [PHONO] then you need to buy a preamp that will provide a line out that can then be plugged into your stereo AUX input. Preamps are available at Radio Shack pretty cheaply and small too.

Oh ok. I heard you needed something with “Audio In” inputs. So I searched my house for any old device with audio in inputs. I found an old vcr with audio ins and thought it might work.

I was recently thinking about pre amps but wasn’t sure if I should buy one.. Is this what I would need?

I would imagine that this pre amp cartridge would take the place of the vcr that I originally wanted to use right?

This one is better built and cheaper too.

Yes. Dump the VCR idea altogether. Plug the turntable into input of the preamp. and then buy some new shielded cables to go from the preamp output to your stereo amp input.

either one of those will do.The magnetic pickup need a preamp.
But out of curiousity try the vcr input. It can hurt it.

Hey I think I’ve developed a new idea. What if I:

1. Hooked the turntable to the pre amp

2. hooked the pre amp to my blu ray player

3. The turntable then plays through my TV speakers.

Would this set up work?
