Are there any English accents that are like this?

First off, I’m American. I watched the show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the character of Spike, who was meant to be a North Londoner, was played by American actor James Marsters. His accent slipped on certain words, but I hear from some people that he did an okay job. The thing is, the way he pronounced the word “can’t”, was the way an American would. Every other time I hear an English person pronounce “can’t”, it sounds like “carnt”. I thought the problem was just Marsters slipping on that word, but I thought it was strange that he pronounced it that way every time he said it.

But then, I saw “Moulin Rouge” with Ewan McGregor, in that film, he played an Englishman, and he pronounced the word “can’t” the same way Marsters did.

My real question is, is there any form of an English accent that pronounces the word “can’t” the American way?

I’ve never heard any kind of American accent that pronounces “can’t” like “carnt”. The strangest I’ve heard “can’t” be pronounced in an American accent sounds like “caint”

Well McGregor is Scots so that might be why. And Spike was pretty laughable. Out of interest I think the Queen would pronounce can’t as caunt as in aunt. How is Hugh Laurie’s accent in House?

I find his American accent entirely convincing. Flawless.

In the case of Ewan McGregor though, his accent in Star Wars as Obi-Wan pronounced “can’t” like “carnt”, so I didn’t think he was slipping in when he pronounced it “can’t” in “Moulin Rouge”. I thought he was just using a different dialect.

could be-after all, he is an actor and England has a mass of dialects. My fave is the one Bart simpson does when he speaks English “Gor blimy Guvn’r” etc
