An internship is not a full employed job a.f.I.k., it’s a TRAINEEship which for you don’t need years of experience.
Well, that’s just it though. Most game companies don’t have time to babysit you while you learn, and they don’t have the manpower to spare to “train” you. I hate that people are like that, but this industry in particular is very competitive. And I know for a fact that a lot of legal stuff has to take place before you are allowed to even KNOW ABOUT certain video game projects before they are launched publicly. I don’t think they’re going to go through Non-Disclosure Agreements and Non-Compete Agreements with somebody who is just an intern that they don’t intend to keep around.
I really do think that the best way to get into the business is to learn how to do it yourself. Not only does that promote creative growth within the industry (because you are using creativity to learn things your own way, rather than just going along with some company’s normal standards), but it also allows you to spread your wings a little bit and maybe come up with a crazy low-tech hit like Neopets. And if that happens, then you won’t even NEED to work for a video game company. You can just have your own.
