Umm, that sounds kinda weird… I mean a person loses a car, the method he uses to get to work and as a result loses his job… soooo did he just stay home because he didn’t have a preferred manner of transport to work untill he got fired for skipping work or something???? I mean there is public transport, you can walk, you can ask a co-worker for a lift, you can buy a bicycle…

More specifically to the question asked: you can buy a used car, used car lots can be found in every city.

The fastest solution if you’re on a tight budget is to buy a bicycle. 40 minutes by car will be twice as long for a rookie cyclist but it will get the job done.
As for the car I repeat - used car lots, find one near you using google and google maps

Then you should post the whole story right in the post and not let people guess what you’re circumstances are.

5 grand?
I just googled for used cars for Illinois and got a bunch of offers for an exact thousand and less. You can sell your current car for parts and if it was a good one you may get a third of the sum right away from the deal.

we are doing that and all the money we recieve is going toward a new car well a car good enough to get us from point a to b but i also have to get one near us do to not being able to get around like i would like i go on craigslist everyday all day trying to figure something out but i would also like to just fix the one we have cause it would probably be alot cheaper i just dont know what it all intails and if it is even fixable. it is still a nice looking car with only 54000 thousand miles on it it is a 2002 ford focus motor is great it is just the passangers side wheel and i dont know how to tell if the engine cradle is ok or what we had an offer to junk the car for 325 dollars and we are thinking about doing it but every car i saw the engine was knocking or the tranny is slipping if i get one like that i would be on here again asking if someone knows about cars again, i just need something till tax time and then i can get a decent car and my husband can go back to work next year as a roofer at the same place he has been there for years so it isnt like he doesnt work or is lazy i stay at home with the kids and babysit on the side to bring in extra money so we are not lazy people

describe the damage.

modern cars are made with uni-body construction so damage to the sub-frame can be a serious safety issue.

Passenger side wheel? You have to go into more detail. bent? it’s parallel with the ground? missing? seemingly the only thing holding the car together?

I need more details. As far as shopping for a car strictly in your immediate local, there aren’t any friends or family that would take the time to help you out long enough to shop for a car? It only takes about an hour to look at a car.

inner& outer rods, lower control arm. etc., etc., etc., what are suspect? bent? missing? What did he hit? What makes you think the engine cradle is bent. Is the hood damaged. I will ask you once again what is the damage?

Sounds serious. Was the car totaled by the insurance agency?

Take a look in the engine compartment if the Macpherson strut towers are bent or if see damage to the firewall then, yeah hon there is a very good chance the cradle is damaged and the engine is no longer in alignment with the drive train. –Not safe. ONly way to know for sure is to take it to a frame/body shop.

Craigslist or Oodle, or other free ads would have cheaper cars than 5K. Not what you want, right but something to get you by. Getting hubby to and from work is the important thing here. A older 90’s car should have some life in it. If you hear knocks or something which sounds like rattles in the engine, that’s knock. Stay away from it. It’s an engine killer.

Try not to buy anything with more than 120K on the odometer. You’ll have about 20-40K left on the tranny before it needs an overhaul, of course it’s depending on how it’s been driven. Ford tempos, escorts are cheap but every 50K wear out the timing belt. If this is not done or replaced when needed there could be serious engine trouble.

Always ask the seller/ any probs with the car I should know about? Recent inspection or is it overdue. (this could be a sign of costly repairs the owner doesn’t want to pay for) Any maintenance records? no and no? Sunday driver etc., etc., Grandma drove it only on sunday etc., etc. Thank him or her and go onto the next one. The trick in buying a used car is estimating the cost and how soon repairs will be needed.

Try to find a little diesel if you can. 200K is just not a lot of miles for a diesel. They are better built engines and last longer. less electrical parts - less to go wrong. And they get better mileage. Problem with them ususally are injectors - not cheap but not a regular thing to replace - once every 75-150K sometimes you can get by with just injector cleaner, and fuel pumps which go out in every car. Not too expensive but none the less.

Hope this helps.

You are very welcome. I hope things start brightening up for you soon. Let me know If I can be further help. If you have any more ‘car damage’ questions, then please post some pictures of the car and remember you have to be very detailed when describing what your concerns are.

I will help you all I can. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

You’re very welcome and glad to help.
