Enter the Four Horsemen!
My post isn’t entirely related to my title, but I need some help none the less.
I’ve just finished up a semester and a new one will be starting soon for me. Now while I haven’t actually received the outline of the course I have gotten word from other students on what to expect for one class in particular. That class would be character design. Now what the class is mostly about is the workflow and process of building a character in high and low poly. None of this really matters I guess but if you get it, cool.
Anywho what I was wondering from all of help is what characters sound neat to model in 3d? I’m currently going to plan on Zoro from One Piece, as he’s been a long time favorite I’ve wanted to do.
So if you’ve got any good suggestions for a 3d character for me to do, I’d like to hear it. Also keep in mind that the character must be human, not humanoid, but full human. Can be any era, but I’d prefer ideas that haven’t been done a million times. Meaning I’d like to not do a soldier lol.

Well you can do Nagisa Okizaki from Clannad(an awesome amine), a Dango(also from Clannad), Inuyasha or Kagome or Koga(from a mother amine called Inuyasha), Hikaru or Akira or Sai from Hikaru no Go, or yourself. That’d be cool..
Hmm well inuyasha has been done in 3d as well as his brother and kagome. The others I’ve never heard of, but will check em out.
i have already taken several similar courses… every character needs a story. who are they? what are they after? where did they come from? what time period do they live in? why are they interesting? every single one of these questions will change the way they look. are they neatly dressed or slovenly? thin or large? tall? scarred? angry? friendly? if you’re not telling a story then it’s not a character. they will come to life and jump out at people if you can answer questions like this just by looking at them.
choose some things that interest you while you have this opportunity, because when you get a job doing this, they most likely will be someone else’s designs telling someone else’s story.
Why do I need a story to model a character? I have only a few weeks to do a full 3d model, and writing a history for em would take me a week alone lol.
I think doing myself would be counterproductive in showing my ability as an artist as in the industry I’ll never ever have to model myself and will most likely be modeling actors and comic hero’s if I ever do.
like i said, if you can answer questions about a character just by looking at them, then it is an interesting character. if you’re not telling a story then it’s not a character, but i’m not telling you to write a freaking book. don’t waste a week writing, although it would be an awesome character if you spent a week formulating them. just write down on a piece of paper: who, what, where, when, why and how. answer the questions about your character. if your character doesnt have any history at all then they will be boring.
of course you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. it just sounded like you wanted to get a leg up on this class, and i have been in your shoes so i was just telling you what your teachers are going to tell you.
i assumed you were going to come up with your own character. if you just want to copy someone else’s character then i suppose that’s fine too.
x_x Yeah I’m not gonna make my own, that would take too much time lol.
I’m just looking to take already done characters or a real person (character) and then make them into 3d. Like I was thinking of doing someone from ancient times, maybe like a roman soldier.
hey make a 3d version of gene or melfina. here human characters from the first anime show i watched! outlaw star!! i always wondered what they would look like in 3d form.
I’ve done basic modeling of a character yes. “Baron” you’re taking what it means to make a character way out of scale. I’m not in a writing class, I’m in a game design course where this specific course is about high poly modeling of people and monsters and the low poly game versions. I know for a fact that giving details about where they come from, their name, and how old they are is going to matter. I could be making spongebob in 3d, do I really need to write a history, no, it’s a waste of time.
All I asked for was ideas for characters to be made in 3d, not how to do it in your point of view.
Theres the movie Arn the Knight Templar, who was evidently a legend or person out of history that would be good in a game.
Possible other movie same story: The Kingdom of Heaven.

Not really lame as prolly too simple.
Well then I’ll keep with the theme and go with James Bond (pick your favorite actor). Since I’m somewhat of a younger guy, I really dig the newest one Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan obviously, and Sean Connery. The older ones I liked but since I didn’t grow up with them, they aren’t as close to me.

Spy vs. Spy vs. Spy is the best ^^
I suppose Zero from Code Geass has been done in 3d already, hmm.
Well, there are any number of lesser characters from any story that are unlikely to have been done in 3d. Though offhand, I can’t think of any particularly interesting ones =P
Kakashi could be cool, could easily be done low poly, you could also try Cloud from ff-vii, i guess these two have been done a lot but are still cool ;)
idk if you played darksiders, but i find th Azrael character really cool, and you don’t have to do the wings
:p If I do anyone from Naruto I have quite a few more I’d rather do than kakashi lol. Such as Rock lee and Kimimaro (Bone guy).
rock lee is too plain, it’s not creative(although i’m with you on him beeing cooler), but the bone guy is too much trouble i guess
btw, what’s the software you’re using?
For the class most likely 3DS Max 2012, Zbrush 4.0, and whatever the latest Photoshop is.
i work on 3dsmax, zbrush is too complicated, and i find it almost unusable without a touch screen
do you have to make the textures yourself?
Yuppers, wouldn’t be a very useful game artists if I couldn’t do it.
yes but that’s a totally different set of skills
i selftought max, i’m good at modeling, but i almost know nothing about mapping, every time i try to use the uvw thing, i get a scrambled net of green nonsense instead of clear surfaces like the tutorial, have u ecountered that before?
this is my latest creation:
http://www.3dexport.com/3dmodel-starg…
u can find pics of the original on google, i need that mapping to work in order to finish it, and i could use some help
yeah I use to have an issue with it, I’ve since learned how to unwrap properly
That sounds cool. Idk, what if you did something like an attack of lawn gnomes or somethin random like that? btw, what are you majoring in, graphic design?
Major is game design. My specializations so far are just modeling and texturing with zbrush, 3ds Max, and photoshop/illistrator. I know some game engines, but nothing I’d call well enough.
How about Clint Eastwood or Charlie Sheen?
Lol, charlie sheen might not be a bad idea, could use it as a gag relief.
So apparently I planned ahead for this course and the teacher altered the way it was run from the past classes… So now I create one character, it has to be original (I have to concept it) and then a second character later on, also original, but instead of 10 weeks we have like 4 lol.
Long story short… I’m gonna close this post, thanks for suggestions though. :)
