live help: I really want a sugar glider as a pet :). - Help.com

I really want a sugar glider as a pet :).

They are legal where I live and I’ve done some research on them. They look like very good pets! However, I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with sugar gliders that they could share with me before I adopt the little fellas?

I know aren’t they? They’re kinda odd looking but that’s what makes them so cute!

My friend had one, said they were horrible difficult to take care of as they require a strict diet and lots of attention. However I was also told they are amazingly fun to have as a pet as they love to jump from stuff. Which also means they love to run from you.

Hmmm…good to know. Yeah I’m worried about adopting them and then having to give them away because they are too difficult to take care of. I might just have to do some more research.

THEY ARE A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY. And on top of that they pee everywhere. So you’ll have to clean your walls about once a week or more. They could also stain your carpet if you don’t stay on top of that.

The cost for there things are pretty high. You’ll have to spend a lot of money of a good big cage for them. About 600-1000 or more dollars. That’s not including toys. You’re going to have to spend a lot of time with them, so if you get one you can’t be going out with friends 4 days a week. You have to figure out a way to spend a lot of your free time socializing and cleaning up after them. A minimum of 3 hours a day. They also require a very specialized diet. Meaning, everyday you’re going to have to make them a mixture of fruits and vegetables to keep them healthy. There is no sugar glider pellets. They also eat bugs, so you’ll probably have loose crickets or worms around your house which will make noise and smell. If you see some, it’s . . .not even close to what they need as a diet. You probably won’t be able to find a lot of sugar glider stuff in town, so you’re going to have to order online a lot which is going to add up.

Also, you’re going to have to go to a exotic vet clinic, because a normal vet clinic is not going to know enough to ensure the proper health and recovery. Because it’s an exotic, you can be look at 100 and up dollars every time at the vet.

They can be aggressive and are known to pee on you. A LOT of pee, so expect to have to wash clothes often. Every 3 weeks you have to take apart their whole cage and wash it down. I take my cage to the car wash, but I have to disassemble it and that is a huge pain. They smell so bad in my opinion and they make a lot of noise at night. So if you are someone who needs piece and quiet to sleep, don’t get one.

A lot of people think, “Oh yeah, I know. I’ve done all my research I know what I’m sacrificing” but you have NO idea until you get one. Everything is all good and well at first, but unless you have a lot of time in a day to make sure these guys are getting the right health and attention, they are not going to be a fun pet to own. They live a really really long time. So you’ll have to be able to provide the right environment if you are moving around.

IF you are going to school, and have a job. I suggest not getting one. At the end of the day you’re going to be too tired to scrub down their cage, and cut up all their food for them. Food that you’re going to have to buy every few days or once a week. It’s a lot of money to start with one, and a pricey keep up. If something goes wrong with them, like they get hurt when jumping, you’ll be paying an ENORMOUS vet bill.

Trust me. This is a very serious and expert care requiring pet.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That was really helpful! I’m gonna have to rethink this idea haha. Sounds like a TON of work. My boyfriend has ferrets. I think I’ll just stick to them for now haha. :)

Ferrets are enough work haha, and smelly enough for sure.

Get an easier pet. Gerbils are easy to take care of and extremely social. They also have basically not odor if you keep up on cleaning. They’ll always keep you smiling and dig holes, jump around.

Just be careful with the ferrets! They will kill those gerbils in a heart beat.

Yup, and not ‘passing water’ either.
