How do I work up the courage to get a work reference from my supervisor.

I work in a factory right now that it unstable work and has alot of layoffs. I have started to get less work and really think a work reference would be good in helping me find another job. Problem is that I have been screwing up at my job, less and less as I have been working but still. I kind of hate it, but come to work on time, willing to learn and improve and work with my co workers and help them out when I need to. I am afraid that I wont be able to get a good reference or he will say no. So what are some suggestions on finding the courage to ask him. Thanks

If your work performance has been improving as time goes on, you should be fine to go ahead and ask for one.

hmm I may not be working there that much longer and its takes me a while to pick things up and learn things that are new to me. I have had people tell me that its kind of a disability but I feel like that is kind of ******** and everyone is like that. There is this program that is open to me that I can work with a counceller to help me keep employment with that disability maybe I should try that avenue. Otherwise I will be showing up today not sure if I have work or not. Starting to hate temp work. Or if I end up working here longer ill just try next month to ask.
