As several of you know, I am a 26 year old who is majoring in psychology but also struggles with a variety of health conditions.

Many of the health challenges I am faced with are related to my digestive tract and gastrointestinal system. Anyway, after years and years of being in pain, they have more or less narrowed down the cause to two conditions (gastroparesis and Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction). Well, on my walk back from the store this morning I started to think about how frustrated I get with many of the specialists who work in my town and how my stomach pain and nausea has been an on-going problem for me since I was a very young child. So that got me thinking about majoring in the field of medicine with my focus on gastroenterology. Which then got me wondering if I complete my Associates in Psych if that is even a possibility or if I would have to start anew. Does this make sense or am I off my nut? Any advice, encouragement, and/or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Go for it! A goal that’s inspired by an experience in the past is always the best one.

One of the people I’ve been closest to got an bachelor’s in psychology and then went to medical school… she started regular undergrad at 18 and wasn’t really past medical internships or residency into “real” jobs until she was about… 30, I guess. It’s a lot of schooling. But the same pattern worked, studying psychology and then switching to a very focused pure medical field.

That’s good to know. Thanks!

I can understand you very well. At a first glance it sounds great.
But on the other hand you should consider that the academic education in basic medicine only is much longer than in psychology, not to mention the specialization in gastroenterology afterwards.
So it will take many many years until you can start with your own office or with a good job at a hospital. In your forty-somethings about I guess.

B.t.w. In clinical psychology you could concentrate on a related subject, no? On patients with chronic pain e.g.
