Many of you have been following the on-going battle

I have been having since my gastroenterologist decided to label me as a drug abuser and discharge me from his practice.

Well, here’s the latest:

I have been without a gastroenterologist since November and have had to make a couple 5-6 hr trips to Seattle just to get the medical care I require. While I was in Seattle I received a phone call from my dad informing me that the Department of Health had decided to investigate my complaint. My dad told me that there was a waiver which I needed to sign allowing them to tell my former gastroenterologist who filed the complaint against him and there was another form which allows me to write an impact statement and choose some sort of sanction or punishment. That makes three agencies now involved and looking into my complaint.

When the doctor I was seeing in Seattle heard what my former gastroenterologist had put me through he was appalled and said that my being discharged contradicts everything my former gastroenterologist had ever said (or written) about me. He said I needed a gastroenterologist who is local to me and that he would work with my general practitioner to help get me one b/c it is ridiculous and unfair to expect me to travel 5-6 hrs everytime I have something wrong with my stomach.

I am beginning to feel like there may be light at the end of this tunnel.

hurrah. This sounds positive. I guess you have to waive annonymity in order for the case to be investigated.

Good luck to you.

What I like about your post is you are showing people that taking action helps find a solution. Too many help.com users simply give up and live like passive victims.

Good for you and thanks for sharing.

I’d definitely say that there’s light at the end of the tunnel! Hope you get a GE close to you–who is also both competent and compassionate!

In the case of the GE in question, I believe that he had a run-in with the law in the recent past. Maybe some junkie fingered him as his/her “source.” He may have been totally innocent–but the experience made him paranoid. He probably got so paranoid from the DEA or the local police checking on him that he’d withhold an aspirin from his own kid!

That’s the problem with this misbegotten “war on drugs.” It’s turned the USA into a virtual police state. Cops are always breaking down the wrong door in serving those infamous “no-knock” search warrants, the only purpose of which should be a hostage situation. Minorities are profiled and pulled over on the street and cops threaten them to make them consent to car searches. Careers are destroyed by false positives on drug tests. And the cartels? The war on drugs–and the resulting increase in their price–has made the cartels even stronger. They effectively rule Mexico right now. Some “win” for the “war on drugs,” isn’t it?

And it has even come between doctors and their patients, and has even resulted in terminally ill patients being in pain because doctors are underprescribing pain medications–all because of the stupid “war on drugs.”

This “war on drugs” has had the same effect as Prohibition–it doesn’t really stem the supply, but it enriches the suppliers and criminalizes kids and others who may “experiment” with illicit drugs. What’s worse–some kid wanting to see what it’s like to smoke a joint, or the cops breaking down the door of a 92-year-old grandmother and gunning her down? Yes, the grandmother thing really happened in Atlanta–the cops got the wrong house, shot the grandmother who thought she was defending herself from a home invasion with her rusty revolver, and then planted drugs in her home to make it look like a “crack house.” The coverup failed when they tried to get a regular “informant” to back up their story–he went to the newspaper instead! Now the three drug cops are in prison, but the grandmother is still dead.

Yes, Puck, you did the right thing–and you have undoubtedly saved another patient from getting the same shabby treatment from a scared, paranoid doctor who is worried more about the “war on drugs” than he is about his patients!

Hope the former Gas-SOB gets what he deserves.
I know (indirectly) what you’re going through.
A long time ago, when mom was alive, she went
in for a colonoscopy. The GP knew she was also
a heart patient and that she took coumidan (a blood thinner).
It was determined that she needed some polyps removed.
The doc removed them, but without first taking her off of
the blood thinner she took at the time (because the ba$turd
was too fu(#in’ lazy to work with her Cardiologist).
So, the result was continual internal bleeding until she
almost died from it.
Bearing in mind the nearest ‘real’ hospital was well over
75 miles away. Not nearly the distance you have traveled
but still far enough away.
But here in Alaska, doctors get away with negligence ALL
the time because Alaska is so far removed from the continental
US. That, and no one really gives a $#!t as to what happens
is this corner of the world.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

In the 2nd grade the hospital sent me home while I had appendicitis and told my mom that if the pain went away nothing was wrong. Well, that’s not true. If the pain goes away it means your appendix burst which is a life-threatening emergency. Luckily, I was (and still am) a big complainer when it comes to pain so my mom took me back to the hospital after not too long and they decided that they better look further. They ended up having to remove it.

In the 7th or 8th grade, a neurologist who had just come out of retirement told me I never had epilepsy, never will and not to take myself so seriously and took me off all my seizure meds. This, of course, caused me to have an increase in seizure activity. When I found a new neurologist he was about to tell me the same thing until my mom yelled at him and told him to read my entire chart bottom to top. He didn’t read the whole thing but he read enough of it to get the idea that I had epilepsy. Later I was diagnosed with 3 more seizure types and informed that I had been prescribed the wrong medication my entire life.

So, I completely understand where you are coming from.

I haven’t lost all hope in Doctors and my GP has been helpful since I was diagnosed with work related stress. However, even in hospital with a blood born infection (cellulitus) , Doctors failed to explain the condition and on one occassion ignored the fact I was not to be given Penicilin based antibiotics (I stopped the nurse just as she was about to attach the drip to my vien). I just thought- what will it be like when I am old and have to fend for myself in hospital. Oops timing out…to be continued

What I want to say is that all of these experiences will contribute to you being a very strong and effective individual. At twenty I took on the social services to win back unemployment benifit. I pointed out the work I was asked to do was outside Health & Safety regulations as it was not part of my job role. I won. My parents had no experience of challenging authority and freaked out then, and on other occassions. You may not appreciate this until a new problem presents itself, but you will have gained masses of skills that will serve you well in life :)

Today I saw my family doctor because I was experiencing a lot of upper abdominal pain which was radiating to my back, shoulders, and neck, and was leaving me short of breath. After a discussion and an examination, my doctor said he thought I might have one of three conditions. These conditions are: pleurisy, pneumonia, or pancreatitis. He ordered some lab work and a chest x-ray. I will be getting the results tomorrow.

While I was there he informed me that he had received a phone call from the gastroenterologist I saw in Seattle. My family doctor informed me that the Seattle doctor thinks that it is highly unlikely another ERCP will be necessary but that I will probably be a pain management patient for the rest of my life. My mom asked our doctor what that meant and the response was “pain medication.” To me this was good news because it is a doctor stating that I NEED pain medication and that, again, I am not a drug-seeker or abuser.

I got my results today and everything came back negative. As weird as it may sound, I was kind of disappointed that at least one of the tests didn’t have some anbormalities on it; I am tired of being in pain and feeling nauseated without knowing the source
