i use a free internet sms service called TextNow on my ipod touch. it works in US and Canada, they give you a free phone number so people can text you too. it’s 100% free and you only have to put up with ads.
Up until recently Jaxtr was amazing for this sort of thing but now they’ve only made it free in UK, US and India which really sucks.
But it was awesome whilst it lasted.
