is 500 mL of white wine a lot to have in one day?

I think my mom is an alcoholic because she is always drinking throughout the day. I’ve never kept track of how much she drinks but yesterday she drank about 500 mL (two thirds of a 750mL bottle). Is that too much?

Depends. If she’s doing that daily, then its above recomended daily limits. My dad’s on a bottle plus per night, every night.

If you fell you can talk to her, I would say something about it if its bothering you.
The response you’ll probably get is that its fine, but it is over the daily recomended limit of 1 glass per day.

Hope this helps.

An alcoholic is not judged by the quantity of alcohol ingested, but the need by the abuser.

I may be able to drink twice that amount. Never tried to be honest. I am not an alcoholic. Others can take half a glass and be considered an alcoholic, because that’s what they have had for years and can’t function without it.

As was pointed out above, its a very relative subject. Different people can handle different amounts of alcohol. Some can drink themselves sick and still walk a straight line and drive sensibly. For others one drink is too much.

Think more about your mom and less about what she is drinking. Does she have a lot of problems? Does she wreck cars? Does she act intoxicated and behave in an inappropriate manner?

Basically if she has her life together and the alcohol is not negatively affecting her it is not a social problem. It may be a health problem but most of the people I know either drink or smoke or eat too much. No one is perfect.
