I feel there is something wrong with me.

I am obsessed with neatness. When ever I’m making notes, or highlighting or underlining something in a book I make sure that everything is symmetrical and neat. I write very slowly to make sure that my notes are super clean and if I don’t like a word, or if its crookedly written then I rip out the entire page and start from scratch. I didn’t pay much attention to this issue as I always used to get my work done in time but recently I bought a couple of highlighters and they oozed too much ink, staining the front and back of the page when I used them. I feel so frustrated now as I can’t rip out the text book page. I can’t even read further as that page just repulses me. I hate looking at the dreadfully, irregular marks and they annoy and anger me greatly. I don’t understand what is happening. I even threw out the highlighters as I was very angry with them. Now I can’t study at all and everything is so frustrating. I can’t even write properly these days and I take 10 minutes to write one word to make sure that each stroke of pen is perfect. Can someone tell me how I can please get on with studying because I am lagging behind. Also can someone please tell me a good highlighter brand because “mercury” highlighters suck and I will explode if I have to ever use another mercury highlighter again. Thank you.

You need to go to a doctor. Seems like very OCD behaviour as it’s interfering with your everyday life and stopping you from studying. Talk to a doctor or a therapist, maybe they’ll give you some pointers and make you feel more at ease.

Here’s info about conquering perfectionism: http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives…

Also, you can just choose to be patient. At any frustration you can pause, close your eyes, take in 10 slow deep breaths. Something like this can force you to deal with the frustration itself and your emotional coping rather than obsessively pursuing solutions in the outside world.

But I’ve found that no matter what, sometimes I just have to go outside and run around, or otherwise dramatically switch activities.
