Big help: On American ignorance… - Help.com

On American ignorance…

“In the past, if someone knew nothing and talked nonsense, no one paid any attention to him. No more. Now such people are courted and flattered by conservative politicians and ideologues as “Real Americans” defending their country against big government and educated liberal elites.”

But are stupidity and ignorance the same thing? You can be stupid and know a lot at the same time.

I was just wondering - as a European - how Americans see this themselves. Do you know your own history? Do you care? I have to admit I don’t know a lot about my own history but am starting to realise that I should be more aware of it. It’s part of what makes me who I am.

Stupidity may be interesting too, but since you and the article spoke of ignorance, that’s why I also mentioned it. I know some history but it’s not a particular interest of mine. Most history they teach here is American, European, and then World. Like, the university freshman history classes traced everything back through Europe.

I’m not into politics, so I don’t really have a take on that whole thing.

No, I’m not particularly interested in politics either… but it’s still important.

I’ve never learned anything about US history - except that New York was Dutch at some point. And now they teach us a bit about French involvement in the independence.

I’m just here to demonstrate American ignorance in action.

I find my fellow countrymen woefully ignorant about a number of subjects. The thing that distresses me the most is that they “vote against themselves” in so many elections. They vote for candidates who support the upper 1 percent and don’t care two cents about the bottom 99 percent. In most elections, there really isn’t a choice, as both parties are in the pockets of Big Business.

All of that said, Americans–along with their British and Canadian allies and lately the French–are one of the few peoples who are willing to DO something when something needs doing. It seems like when the USA was attacked, as it was on 9/11, only a few nations really stood with us. Germany always finds a reason not to get involved, as does the entire continent of South America. Oh, yes, Germany and a few other nations sent contingents of up to 50 or 100 people to Afghanistan. That’s a “token” response. What in the living hell do they expect 50 or 100 people to do?

We have the genocide that was going on in Darfur . . . and the Organization of African States (OAS) was sitting on its hands, waiting for the US and other nations to go in and clean up the mess there.

It seems that too many other nations consider their blood much too precious to shed for any cause. NATO is becoming just a hollow shell because most of the member nations only pay it lip service, and do not really pay their fair share. And the United Nations? Totally impotent. During the Bosnian conflict, the Serbs regularly robbed UN personnel of their watches and wallets at roadblocks. A force that allows itself to get mugged is useless as peacekeepers.

Yes, Americans are ignorant of many things . . . but like President Obama said some months ago, it’s time for the rest of the world to step up to the plate instead of sitting on the sidelines like so many spectators.

i think it sounds more like a rant than a well-informed article. all the people i encounter are rather intelligent. then again, i’ve never been to a public school before. i, and the people i spend time with, dish out thousands upon thousands of dollars for a higher education. there’s no time to be stupid.
