wondering help: WHAT happened and WHERE are they? - Help.com

No idea about the other ones, but I think littlenick has been banned.

Littlenick is moved from basement to basement in the homes of the moderators. They feed him bread and water, and occasionally give him a tin of sardines.

But the rest of us are still around! ;-)

I know the feeling. I’ve been around here 3 years ago just for a little bit (different account, yuniko) and things were a lot different back then. I won’t say better, just different. Last year came back and it seemed everything was changed and lots of names simply disappeared. I remember littlenick and bogdan the most.

The autoupdate was a neat feature, I guess CBS decided help.com wasn’t worth it. :/

I guess most of us got here in a rough day, probably the reason why we manage to get along fine. After all, we are all on the same boat! On top of that, most folks make us feel welcomed, and it’s always nice to know that there is someone always ready to listen. :)

Both of those, chat and auto-update, made the site more real-time and live, so getting rid of them really killed the site. Not so much chat, because that was a much smaller group of people, but the auto-updates affected everyone. The point was to speed things up, because that was the biggest complaint help.com users brought to the new admins when CBS took over. So, the whole site speeded up, but became so much harder to use that people stopped bothering. The other major problem I remember offhand was that the avatar system was screwed up off and on throughout 2009 and 2010.

And a lot of those people you listed have been gone for a long time (bogdan ‘left forever’ years ago).

I think everything would be more intuitive if they could fix the auto-updates or at least more minor things like “wait please…” after replying. Okay, I’m waiting. :) But they won’t fix anything, so the next best thing is to try to post and reply, which I’m doing with all these words.

Sad to say the new generation young folk have found help.com and bombarded with all kinds of foolishness and juvenile behavior. I have no interest in telling 13-15 yr olds how to kiss, make love, keep, or steal boyfriends, or worse, girlfriends… Dirty old men asking for child molestation advice. It’s a whole new dysfunctional world that are not interested in voice of reason, respectability, or common freaking sense. Nope, they’re down and dirty and seem brainless. ok, that’s a quick summation. There may be one, or two, real help situations or questions. Reading down the list to find one is quite discouraging … but still here trying to help someone like all you have helped me. So we wait around, glad you’re back - :)

well the only communicating admin never replied to a email I sent (he used too) so now i think we are in the dark on that subject

because whilst he may of had good replies and helped he also never listened

the others are likely still around but with a name change, no one really leaves, they say they do they just assume a new idenity

Funny that Mikey said that because I was thinking the same thing the other day. But of course littlenick was all about the copy and paste and Willy is all original, so I decided that it could not possibly be so. It has changed here a bit, but CBS and the admins. are not the problem.
Before the site had both fantastic experienced helpers and little trolls that kept you on your toes.

Now…why let it rent space in your head. If your opinion or advice makes somebody uncomfortable…a mod without any professional training (no offense meant) will ban you.

My feeling of the site changed when they made a 13 year old boy, whom was banned several times for trolling and making up false stories a mod because they didn’t have anybody else.

This action and his behavior insulted both the site and most long term members that really cared.

Maybe Daft Puck or Sam may remember I’ve changed the amount participation and time I put in here.

By the way, I still communicate with some of the former members who choose “not to lurk” here and they’re doing fine.

I myself work long hours within a real community and still answer shouts and will step up to the plate when asked:)

Just to be clear. If someone can’t drive and has had no training, to say “they can’t drive” is not an insult on them. It’s a lack of skill.

Every site goes through huge changes over time. It’s like a growing child: parents may not really notice the difference day to day because it’s so gradual. But someone who has been gone for a while is shocked.

People come in and people go out. The climate will change, trends and fads will appear and disappear again only to return in some new form…but as long as it’s still working, people will look for help and find it here.

Wow, those are some names I haven’t seen in a while! Bogdan especially, no one ever seems to mention him anymore. I miss that guy.

I don’t think Help.com will ever be restored to its former greatness, but it still serves its purpose for the most part. Honestly, I kind of wish some trusted, long time member would learn how to code and bring back some of the more awesome features, like auto updating in replies and the chat. Either way, a lot of friends have left Help.com for good. Heck, I’m kind of phasing out lately as well. I do miss the old Help, but things change. Sometimes things get better, and sometimes they get worse. It’s just how things work.

By the way, if you’re ever having trouble finding people’s profiles through the Help search, type “site:help.com (their username)” into Google, and it’ll either come up with their profile, or a post that they were involved in. Through that, you can tell if they’ve been banned, or if they’re still alive, when they last posted/replied.

I just figured if I can’t help myself; I can’t help anyone else. It always made me upset when i either couldn’t get help or just simply felt ignored/denied. So I thought it would be best to stop helping others so much, if any of that makes sense.

It drains me.

Complaining to CBS has been a big waste of time in the past. Many have tried and have gotten no response, acknowledgment or resolve.

Hey Doll….it’s people like you that bring me down to earth and calm me down:)

Some of us are still around but no longer go to new posts. People don’t ask questions I’m interested in helping with anymore…and I dunno, the regulars are mostly gone so I stick to the posts I know and care about.

I think the hugest decline on help.com over the years was when they stopped sending posts you might be interested in to your notice box. There used to be all the posts you already commented on on the left side and on the right there was a column full of posts that had tags relevant to stuff you regularly helped with. THAT is what kept me here for hours at a time! I’d be ready to get off then see a post pop up that said “I’m afraid my husband is going to do something awful” or “Am I the only one who doesn’t like the upside down ketchup bottle” and I’d HAVE to comment! That’s what went wrong for me…that thing stopped showing new posts.

I’ve noticed the change, too. I’ve only just started coming here regularly again, and it just doesn’t seem as lively as when I first joined. I’ve seen it happen to other places on the internet, too, though; you stay away for a while, and when you go back all of your friends have gone. I guess it’s just life, people move on.

Still around but not as much as before. Happened to check the site today and saw your post. A site this like goes through its cycles. Where voids are created others find the urge to fill in those gaps and to carry on.

They came. They helped. They moved on. Each had a different reason. A choice made by them or made on their behalf.

There is always the option of their return. This gives us the chance to make new friends over Help.com. A chance to teach others what we have learned from those who have come before us.

I notice that some members answering your post think that it relevent to now, it isn’t.
Myself, I hope that chat never returns to help com. It was abused and missused by many when it was here, many of us are glad it is gone.

Yes the site has changed yet again, it will keep on doing so, it is in the nature of the beast to do this.
The site is awfuly slow, is slowly disintergrating, lots of it doesn’work. There is no Erik or Jeff to fix it any more. The site now belongs to CBS as you state in your post.
You can always ask them to fix it, I doubt you will have much success.

Not much. He was nice to me, like to all the site regulars. My name was on his list of “cool links”, which made me very slightly uncomfortable and he took it right off when I mentioned that. It would be other people who had problems with him.

I miss littlenick too, I loved reading a joke on every post. It may have been against the TOA (whatever that is) but it kept the mood of the sight upbeat and you had to check the next post just to see what the new punchline was. And it was always borderline risque too, so it kind of pushed the envelope of acceptability. Much like Big Willy?

Oh and okei! Amelia Earthling used to be here everyday and she just disappeared like Roltz. I have no idea about them. I have Pheegee on Facebook she is still alive just not here or on the net as much.

I feel the same about the site, i remember coming here soon 4years ago and spending hours on it trying to help and get advice. I remember keeping in touch regularly with users, familiar names would be all around, whenever their avatar showed up i already knew who they were and what they’ve been dealing with. Lately i come around like once a day, check my notices if i have any and leave, somehow nothing seems the same anymore:(

Yeah, that’s a lot of what killed the mood here! The lively people like littlenick and the passionate people like Xeno got banned. Littlenick used to make me laugh every day and Xeno made me laugh and think about things I’d never considered before. He had a lot to do with teaching me to accept other people for who they are!

Oh yeah, Xeno was aching to get banned, man. He got temp banned a ton with plenty of warnings and us asking him to stop acting up but he still got himself perma banned. I miss him, but it was definitely his fault and he did it on purpose.

Yes, for the time being i have 3 jobs, but i have handed my notice in on one of them.
2 of them are quite casual, but once i fin at this one, one of the others is becoming full time.

Ive also joined a gym so have been spending all my spare time there, or cooking up master pieces in the kitchen, im on here now cos i’m ‘knockin on heavens door’ with the flu, so am not going to the gym & it’s my day off work.

I haven’t intentinally stopped flirting with you, Doc, i’ve just been really busy.
I’m going to start making more of an effort to get on here more now though.

i don’t know, a reply comment like you must be on your period in response to someone’s problem is not my idea of help … and that happened several times, while he was funny and helpful one minute, he was also deeply caustic - not good for someone struggling

that the adress for it though, more people use skype, or atleast the ones i talk to, just because its easier and you can do group calls and such.

i knwo what you mean about the site not being the same tbh, it has definitely lost something over time :( people arent as friendly as they used to be, or around as much, im not just because im busy with stuff and things are sowly getting better, but always come back to check up on every one, atleast once a month, which isnt much i know but like you were saying with notifications and the shouts, theyve just kinda died :/

I’m pretty attached to help.com too, I think I’ll probably keep coming back as long as the site stays open. I do go through periods where my life gets too busy to visit much, but even when life’s pretty good (like now) I like being here. It’s a lot more interesting than Facebook.

Personally, I do understand what you mean.
Don’t say goodbye though, too strong of a word. There’s more to help.com than crying, there are also some nice people (just like you) and those friendships don’t go anywhere. :)

that the adress for it though, more people use skype, or atleast the ones i talk to, just because its easier and you can do group calls and such.

once in a while help.com is a reliever, but staying too long can be more of a negative than a positive thing (you know, with all the negative vibes/ energies brought by the problems/ troubles posted)

I know what you mean, kinda o fthe reason i left, once i was through the rougher patch and i started seeing all the depressingness of everyone else it just made me feel bad about everythign all over again, so now i try not to get so involved with everything. though the place has trained me to be better at giving advice…so i get stuck with everyones problems at school..atleast its one talent i have :L

Hello there, I was about to hit the sign out button when I read this invite. I’m one of the oh so many who have not been visiting much just because the career side is demanding to much of my time sometimes I forget that this place is still on. I miss the people here, this month marks my 4th year in here and YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW that I still honor this place no matter how busy I am and no matter which place in reality I will be. AND no matter how this place brings headaches at times. lol

They’ve been difficult, but I’m trying hard to learn to be a little bit more open. That’s why this isn’t anonymous…..and yes, I’ll probably freak out about saying this tomorrow, so I’ll post before I get too scared.

It’s good to be brave and just go for it sometimes. Tomorrow, don’t look back at this and regret it, look back and see this as a step forward, in the right direction. I’ve been the same way for a while, kind of secluded and scared of being open. But just this past spring, I’ve kind of forced myself to be more open and social, not just with my problems, but with everything, my life in general. It takes time and lots of effort, but it’s worth it :)

Okay, fine. You got me. If anybody is interested btw: I joined the site about 5 years ago under the name ‘Captain Roj.’ My real name is Roger, and I shorten it to Roj because I’m so street. Anyway, the account got banned pretty soon after I joined (I didn’t know the rules) so I made a new account called ‘Captain Roj Returns.’ Then I got banned again. I think I fell out with someone and was a bit rude about them…or directly to them. I can’t recall. Oh wait, I think basically everyone hated me for a bit. That sounds right. Anyway, at some point I made an account called ‘Super Steve’ or something to go on the site covertly (I smoking a lot of weed and I had very little to do), but eventually I made another ‘Captain Roj’ type account with my Pirate Elvis avatar (which is awesome) and I forgot all about Steve. When I was inevitably banned again some time later, I started using the ‘Steve’ account again. What with my love of ‘The Dark Knight’ and having a lot of free time, I made the avatar (which I no longer have sadly) of me in Joker-face. ‘Why So Roj?’ didn’t sound right (although now I actually like the sound of it) so I just kept the Steve theme and adopted the name ‘Why So Steve?’ instead. When that account got banned too ages later and - as Dani pointed out - “I went off the deepend,” I had a long sabbatical from the site. I got my life together and also became a Christian, and about 2 years ago I was so fanatical about my newly found beliefs that naturally I wound up back here. I opened a new account under the name ‘Brother Roj’ (I know) but barely used it. Then I was bored last week and came online. I’m still a Christian but not as zealous by any means, so I just changed my name to something more appropriate. ‘R.O.G.’ is a genuine nickname given to me some years back so I just decided to use that. And here we are.
