Portal 2 is crashing!

I have the full version of Portal 2. Last night it worked fine, but now, I run it, and it’s fine till I load my game. It freezes on the loading screen, then eventually crashes with no error report at all, except once I have gotten “Failed to create DirectX device.” My DirectX is up-to-date, along with Steam and Portal. Most people say this happens in Chapter 5, but I’m only to chapter 2. I tried the Chapter 5 solution anyway (running as admin,) and all I got was my single report. When I did it again to check what the error read, nothing happened except the same crash to desktop, no error reports. Help!

Alright. Is your version of the game downloaded or on a disk?

Hmm. To be honest, I don’t have as much experience with Steam downloads. They have help forums, however.

Good luck D:

Thanks anyway. I’ve looked at tons of bug lists and submitted a ticket to Steam. So far, no luck.

Call Steam. Sounds like their problem.

Did you try restarting the computer a couple times?

That issue is known to happen with a vast amount of games, usually when the system auto-installs updates. More often than not, a few restarts are all it takes for the problem to be solved.

Yunikat how do you know so much about computers? You have the answer to everyone’s computer ills every time.

I don’t. My computer knowledge is limited to Windows and a little general knowledge about how hardware parts work (and as such, I wouldn’t be capable of recommending a graphics card, for example). I also enjoy disassembling stuff (and laptops are not excluded) though, which helps a bit.

I’ve spent a big part of my free time in a computer store between my 14 to 17 and then proceeded to study computer programming and hardware on high school. When I got out, realized that computers are a pain in the rear and never wanted to touch programming again.
