Uniting people to protect the Planet.
EARTH HOUR 2012 ~ 31st MARCH 8:30 - 9:30
Lights out! No electricity!
This is its 6th year, Earth Hour demonstrates the true power of people uniting to protect the planet.
JOIN IN ~ take it further and look at what else you can do in your daily life for a cleaner, healthier, wealthier, sustainable future …..
less carbon emissions - try going without electricity at the same time for the hour each evening - turn all electricity OFF at the points, less packaging - buy direct from the markets for your produce with your own containers/bags, less manufacturing of goods - recycle your household goods by donating to second hand stores = less wasted = less unnecessary landfill, and purchase your goods from second hand store, less pollution - ride your bike to school/work = cleaner environment = happier/healthier wild life and US, less liter - bin it - never liter the environment you live in, water is precious - have shorter showers - reuse the water from the rinse cycle when doing your clothes washing - put it on your plants/lawn …..
Can you think of any more ideas? Please feel free to post …
and don’t forget LIGHTS OUT on March 31st 8:30pm.
Love to you!

I will definitely be participating in Earth Hour this year!
Could I suggest that we all just eat a Wall Street investment banker instead? ;-)

That would be another way to save our planet.
I’m rather cynical of this Earth Hour thing. Sounds like the sort of thing will.i.am or Lady Gaga would do a speech and a song about. Basically a trend with little real impact.
For a start, why the 31st March. Why not now? Yes, right now. If we really care about the environment, why not turn of our PC’s right now? Hm? Why only once a year? Why not once a week? Why not generally less use idea. But of course there couldn’t be a whole big hoohaa over that.
(sorry if I sound kinda boisterous, I sorta let my cynicism run a bit)
@ Princess Cat - good on you for contributing. X
@ Dani - recycling is good! It’s good to do ’something’ rather than ‘nothing’. X
I have to admit that it really bums me out when we are talking about turning off our electricity for one hour while Al Gore’s monthly electric bill is something like $20,000.
Again I turn to the corporate world . . . WHAT ABOUT all of those electric signs that are turned on 24/7 for advertising? That lighting is using up our resources, and it also pollutes the night sky so you cannot see the stars. Why can’t all of the billboards and electric signs go dark after 8 p.m., unless the business is actually open afterwards?
And what about the craze for the latest and greatest electronic gadgets . . . people standing in line for hours to buy the newest iPad or Android tablet, and throwing their old models into the landfill?
I’ve also had an idea for a long time about television sets. Why don’t we all unplug our television sets for a month to protest all of the stupid programming, and the too many–too loud commercials? Let the broadcasters lose a month’s worth of advertising revenue and see what kind of effect that has! And, if necessary, we can extend the plugout until they REALLY get the message!
I’d also like to see a worldwide wildcat strike where EVERYBODY just walked off the job to protest these insane gasoline prices! Economists say that there is NO REASON for the price hikes–except gouging by the oil companies. A one-week wildcat strike would really get our bribe-taking politicians energized–because all of the NON-oil companies would want their heads for being the cause of a one-week wildcat strike! It’s going to take some dramatic action like this before our politicians finally realize that we’re sick and tired of their letting the top one percent call all of the shots!
If you want to save electric, unplug all devices that have lights such as cable boxes, microwaves, ovens, because they suck energy even when not using them and doing this saves on the bill
I know one hour is going to have little impact in real terms. But it’s still an impact.
I think it’s a simple, positive gesture that many of us CAN do to show that we do want to try. We’re not going to be perfect at the eco-thing, but does that mean we shouldn’t do something at least?
I like the idea that somewhere over on the other side of the planet, at exactly the same time as me, someone is thinking the same kind of thoughts as me. That I’m not the only one sitting pondering “stuff” about what I do wrong, what I could do better, what I could do with a little effort, what I could do if I had a bit of support… and what I might write to some squandering fatcat when the lights go back on.
I think I will definitely be pondering why on earth our numpty prime minister and one of his merry band decided to do a bit of scaremongering … telling us all to fill up our petrol tanks and, supreme numpty MP going so far as to tell us to stockpile fuel in our garages! Perhaps I will write them both a letter and demand to know why they didn’t simply suggest lift-sharing and public transport instead?
This is the sort of thing I do when the lights are off. Thinking. Discussing with friends, putting the world to rights…
I know, it could be any hour, any day.
But I like the idea that I’m sitting by my candle, thinking in tandem with Flutterby and others on the other side of the world..
I know that it isn’t a huge thing to turn off electricity for an hour, but it’s more of a gesture that we make to tell the world, “I don’t want to see the environment be destroyed right under my nose, and I plan to do something about it!” The Earth Hour organizers also advise us to “go beyond the hour” by making some serious changes to our lifestyles for the rest of the year. So yes, it definitely makes a difference.
I like to think of Earth Hour as my personal reminder to take stock and reconsider if I’m doing my best ..
Just remember folks, there are trillion dollar, bank invested coorperations that want you to believe the propaganda according to their definition.
And, if it were up to them, you would be literally taxed for the air you breathe due to your CO2 emmission(s).
I like your thoughts guys… Thank you~!
It is true, it is not a huge gesture to be turning off the lights, but as dani, mums and princess say, it is to get you thinking and hopefully acting, on what we can do to ‘go beyond the hour’.
We can’t do much about greedy arrogant large corporations, but if ‘us’ - the little guys - take action, while pushing for more, these big guys just might HAVE to eventually too. It will be in their faces too much, to not do something. (hopeful thinking maybe?)
I know here in Australia some major players are doing some good work. . . we have rebates on electricity if installing solar panels, we also have fantastic looking water tanks that double as borders/fencing, children at most public schools grow their own large veggie patches and a lot of this food goes towards their own canteens, we have energy saving light bulbs - energy provider reps. come out and speak to residence about the benefits of these and how else to save on electricity, affordable sky lights (my parents live in a house with dark kitchen that needed the light on most of the time but since they have had the sky light installed, they only turn on at night time, our bins are many - one for general rubbish, one for green waste, one for recycle, half-flush on most toilets, water saving shower heads, free bus shuttles for big events (football matches) ………
It is my personal belief that we can’t afford to be pessimistic about saving the planet we live and I do believe (once again, could be wishful thinking) that one day soon we will ALL be on board and live will only get better!
